General discussion

cannot disable file sharing

Dec 28, 2010 2:56AM PST

All my user files are being shared, despite me turning off file sharing and network discovery. I can manually disable file sharing for individual files by clicking the share button on windows explorer, but I cannot do this for them all. Additionally, some of the files for which I disabled files sharing reverted to sharing! I ran a virus check using 2 different applications and also ms malicious software removal. All found no viruses. What might be causing this? How do I disable file sharing for all my files? Thanks in advance.

Then if that fails

There is either a real problem or malware is on the machine turning it back on.

For now, install a firewall and set the firewall to block all file sharing.

Who is sharing your files

What are they using?

Is this some home network, or an internet sharing?

On is on.

But firewalls are configurable to block or allow this or that.

Are you writing you didn't configure it?

Who is they? There is no network, just one computer. The firewalls are configured to block sharing, but all the files have the file sharing icon.

Got it.

Just ignore it since we are not having any troubles. If you want to research this, the default in 7 is to enable sharing if you connect to your wifi and answer it's a private network.

Next time if you want, try the public network.

With the firewall installed and blocking shares and if you answered the usual way for the wifi or ethernet then all looks proper.

I misunderstood.

You said, "All my user files are being shared".

Thanks for putting me right.
