Cannot detect my wireless network through Windows Vista

Oct 26, 2007 1:01AM PDT

Hi. I don't have much experience with computers, but I recently purchased (last week) a desktop: Dell Inspiron 531, AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5000+ with 2 gigs of RAM, Vista Home PRemium and a Broadcom 802.11g network adapter. I am running a network in the house with a Linksys WRT54G router. My laptop (Dell Inspiron 2200, Celeron 1.8ghz) connects fine, as does my brother-in-laws laptop (not sure of all specifics but it runs Vista Home Premium, a Broadcom network card and is an AMD Athlon). My new desktop will not even detect a wireless network, even if I set up the computer right next to the router.

Is there something that I need to switch on? I am really frustrated with this and cannot seem to find the answer I need online. Maybe I'm not looking for the right thing?

Thanks.

I'm sorry. My router is set up on a WPA-PSK with TKIP encryption. Are these the settings that are needed?

Also, the router is on, my laptop and my brother-in-laws laptop connect perfectly fine, and we didn't have to do anything at all to my brother-in-laws HP laptop with Vista Premium other than provide the password to log in.

Please review that link again.

You didn't tell me if you got that Vista patch or the settings of your router (you didn't tell all...)

So recheck this again and don't forget that we are working your laptop and not those that work...

Working now

I followed the link to the other forum and then the link to microsoft help that detailed how to edit the registry. I did that, rebooted and it now detects the wireless network.

Thanks for all of your help!!!
