Question

cannot delete files from windows media library

by Buck_Paull / May 11, 2011 12:18 AM PDT

I am using w7 and windows media player automatically loads a unknown file in my library. The problem is that most of the music is already in the library in the form of albums. Now I can't delete the unknown file or edit it.

It does not have a name other than unknown. In the file are 147 songs from other files in My Music. When I right click there is no properties, when I click on open file location nothing happens. When I click delete nothing happens, not even the dialog box for recycle confirmation. I've had this happen before but have always been able to delete until now.

OK and in that case..

It's possible that the library file has become corrupted. It's just a file and not the music files themselves, so see if the guidance in the Microsoft link below works;

The problem is not exactly the same as yours I think, but it is close enough. Also, this relates to either Windows XP or Vista, but it still works with Windows 7 for WMP 12, (I just tested it).

This may mean you will have to re-create any playlists, I am not sure.

Let us know how you get on.

Mark, thanks for the reply. It was very helpful. You were correct in that I will need to rebuild the library, which is going to be a chore as I had 257 LP albums in it. However, the link you supplied worked great. Again, thank you. Buck

But I'm sorry about rebuilding the library.
