Cannot delete files from CD-RW data disk

Jan 15, 2005 11:03AM PST

I am helping a friend troubleshoot. He has Record Now 6.0 that came bundled with an HP computer. He burned his first data disk to a CD-RW and can drag and drop and send to and from between the Hard-Drive and the CD-RW drive; however, he cannot delete a file from the CD-RW data disk. They all have Read Only attributes. I have tried changing the attributes but still cannot delete.

Would appreciate your help so I can help him.

Personally, I never used RecordNow.
Usually, you need to format the CD-RW first, then you're able to use the drive to add or delete files.

"They all have Read Only attributes."

Maybe RecordNow detects the drive as a CD-R.
Just copy your file on your hard drive, FORMAT (UDF) the CD-RW and try again.
Corruption is possible sometimes.

SylentStar -- My thanks for your reply. I do not use RecordNow either, and I, too, have to format the CD-RW disk before making a data disk.

If RecordNow is detecting drive as a CD-R, he would not be able to drag and drop or add to the data disk or be able to use send to option....would he?

I have separate CD/DVD and CD/DVD-RW drives -- my friend has one drive that does it all.

I know, I had the same thought. But sometimes, nothing surprises me.

A CD-Drive is capricious sometimes.
Is it a new drive? (Problem of incompatibility with your Operating System, Service Pack or the CD-RW used; firmware upgrade needed, who knows ?)
Did you test with another program, like Nero or B's Recorder, etc ? Very easy to test the CD-Drive on your own computer if you wish.
Want to know? My CD/DVD-RW do not detect a CD. It is a new drive, the last one died. Impossible to upgrade (firmware not available for now, just a patch to make it "Region Free", but it is not my intention to move to Asia, really!)
But works VERY well with DVD Dual Layer, and my CD-RW is OK.
I need to wait for a fix. (Incompatibility I'm sure with maybe Service Pack 2 XP)

OK. Test the drive on your computer, or install your own software.

CD-RW problem (damaged?), impossible to know for sure now.

Good Luck!

P.S. About firmware: Bad flashing could destroy your drive definitively. Read carefully the installation notes of your firmware before you upgrade. The Firmware Page and the drive manufacturer can't be responsable on REMEMBER: This is at your own risk!!!!
The last alternative.

Since this is a problem on a friend's computer, I think I will have him call HP. RecordNow is a feature of their computers, although they partner with Roxio.

I agree with you that the CD-RW drive can be capricious. I have a Dell and my first CD-RW drive died when the computer was a year old. They replaced it and so far, knock wood, it has been o.k.

I think it is about time for firmware for mine, but Dell has not issued any firmware downloads for my GoldStar. I contacted Goldstar and they do not have firmware for my model. They told me it could only be had from Dell. Eventually, Dell, will come out with one and they will be responsible if it causes harm. I just upgraded my BIOS from Dell for SP2 and all seems well.

Thank you for your input.

record now
Jan 17, 2005 10:09AM PST

I have an HP and I love record now because it's so simple for a non computer person like me to use. I use CD-R's for everything and I see no way to format a CD-RW with record now. Checked the online help and they mention nothing about using CD-RW. On my old computer with 98 I had a portable HP burner and that also had record now but there was another program with it to format the CD-RW's. I forget the name but it was by Roxio and it seems with this computer I did not get that or don't know how to access it if I want to use CD-RW. You might find these boards on the HP site helpful. I have gotten better help on the boards compared to calling HP.

Thank you so much, Mary, for the information. My friend is not a technical person either, and I agree with you that recording to a CD using RecordNow is very easy. Thank you also for the link to the HP forums.

The file you are thinking of by Roxio might be their UDF reader. I use Roxio Easy CD Creator for CD-R and CD-RW, and this file was included.

No not that. I just looked at the install software and I think it's direct CD, does that sound right? For some reason I seem to remember I found out it was a product of Roxio or something like that. It lets you formatt, fast formatt and drag and drop to a CD-RW. It's been so long and I only used a CD-RW once on that computer with it. So you used the record now for a CD-R and the direct CD for the CD-RW I guess.

Direct CD

Hi Mary -- Direct CD is part of my Roxio and it is the format utility for CD-RW. I do not know if it works with RecordNow, even though RecordNow partners with Roxio.

I took this from the DirectCD options:

"Close to UDF v.1.5 Select this option if you want DirectCD to automatically close the CD to the UDF v.1.5 format when you click Eject. The CD can then be read on most CD-ROM drives after installing a UDF Reader.

"Close to Read on Any Computer Select this option if you want DirectCD to automatically close the CD to the ISO 9660 standard when you click Eject. The CD can then be read automatically in most standard CD-ROM drives under Windows.

On my old computer the direct CD was installed when I installed the record now software for the burner so they came together. You called up the direct CD when working with a CD-RW and when working with a CD-R you called up the record now.

Thank you, Mary. Next time I work on my friend's computer, I will do a search for Direct CD to see if the file is there. The RecordNow came bundled with his computer.

I will be away for a few days, but if Direct CD is on his computer, I will be sure to let you know.

On my newer computer with XP I have a built in burner and software was pre-installed and I only have record now and no direct CD so you may not find it.

Hi, Mary -- you're right! I walked my friend through a search. He has two Direct CD files. One is AOL, and the other tells him not to use because it is not compatible with Windows XP. Go figure! Happy
