Cannot delete files

by princessalkane / January 12, 2010 11:30 AM PST

Hello, I started d/l a popular tv series (total ~60 GB) but when it was completed around 15% I stopped the d/l. My external HD is reading that the 60GB is used. When I try to delete it I get an error saying "cannot read from the source file or disk". I copy the folder to an alternate external and it deletes fine off of that (with the whole 'this file is too big for the recycling bin etc. etc." but it is still stuck on the original external. Is there any way to automatically bypass recycle bin and dump it? Or am I stuck with minus 60 GB of space forever?

You can bypass the recycle bin by holding down the shift key and hitting the delete key after selecting the file/s. For this problem though, you can use a little free program called Unlocker. It will unlock the restriction on the folder, allowing you to delete it.

thanks for the tip! the unlocker (i d/l and used two different unlockers) allowed me to d/l all but 6 GB of show left. Much improvement from the 67 gb used!

What else do you have on the external drive? If nothing else you can always format it.

I don't have room to move around the other stuff on the external, but I'll keep the re-formatting tip in mind. thanks.

What file sharing software are you using?

Quite often the software will not allow deletion of the shared file as your own computer is a part of the sharing and is ecpected to contain the portions to be shared.

In short, you might take a close look at the settings for the file sharing software.

You ought to find the clues there. If not still seeding make sure the client is SHUT DOWN then try deleting.

If still no joy you will need to take a look at permissions for the files and directories - specific error messages are helpful.
