Cannot convert my .mpg file to video_ts (DVD)

Jan 31, 2005 9:57AM PST

Hello,

I captured several shows from my TIVO using an SVHS cable and the video capture software that came with my ATI All-in-Wonder 8500 DV (I know it's old, OK?!). I ended up with an 8.02GB .mpg file that views beautifully on my computer. My problem is getting a high-quality copy to DVD that I can send to Iraq and will be viewable on any set-top box.

Can anyone recommend an app that will do the job? Or recommend the best way to get my TIVO shows to DVD?

I tried DVDsanta (Terrible quality, but viewable) VSO's DivXtoDVD (encoding error when attempting to burn, every time) and the capture/recode Nervision Express III (even worse, jerky files)

I have several burning suites (Nero 6.6, RoxioEMC7, DVDshrink, copyNow) and a Sony 4x dual layer burner with the latest firmware. I use only top-quality Verbatim (DVD-R and RW) and RiData DL. Asus P4S8X rig w/P4 2.53 533fsb, 1GB DDR 2700, 250GB Maxtor SATA
HDD.

Any advice would be welcomed, I consider myself an experienced user. Thanks all!

You need around 6000 or better 8000 KB a sec video capture for decent resolution on tv. Doesnt ati software let you custom select capture for mpg 2? Audio no more then 1411 KB.
Nero 6, open smart start, get the dvd selection in drop down. Nero VisionExpress is to easy to use. Aim for file size of 4.4 for DVD5. 8.2 sounds ok for DVD9.
Nero will divide up files to fit discs in any event.

You may need to shut down programs in the background when ati is capturing to prevent dropped frames and avoid choppy video.

Video Soap?
Jan 31, 2005 9:52PM PST

Hi, thanks for the tip to adjust the video settings on the capture to enable TIVO-to-DVD recording. I have another question...ATI offers a "Video Soap" option, to clean up video. I set it to "Sports, fast motion" but could this also be the problem? Should I disable this feature? Thanks!

Not sure

Probably I would say undo soap.
Take Bobs advice and run the final ready to burn file (Video_TS) thru DVD Shrink.

I have a question.

8.02GB represent how many hour/s of video? You say it looks great; are you using some software player on the computer to view this 8.02Gb file? I may be wrong but I get the feeling that what you captured isn't in high enough resolution.

Try Showbiz 2

I have Showbiz 2 and it does a good job of rendering a high qulity dvd from a standard mpeg2 file. Options allow you to set the bits per second in the conversion. To maintain high quality, you would need to cut your video into two dvd's. Showbiz 2 goes for around $99 the last time I looked.
