Resolved Question

Cannot connect to router unless beside it

Dec 11, 2011 6:18AM PST

I have a Gateway laptop and i used to leave it in my bedroom and then all of a sudden i started to get problems where i would randomly disconnect then reconnect again, i never thought of it much until i completely stopped being able to connect to my internet from my bedroom and other rooms.

The only way i can connect to my internet is if i am right beside my router in the same room, if i am on the other side of the wall where my living room is (still beside the router with a wall between) i barely get an internet connection.

I sent my computer into Future Shop and sent it back to Gateway and they found nothing wrong.

PLEASE HELP.

PS. I am running on Windows 7 64 Bit and I have a Rogers SMC Networks router.

wireless signal

You either do not have enough signal or you have interference.

You need to try the standard change the channel on the router trick and see if it makes any difference. You could have a neighbor that turned on a new router and if you and him use a common SSID you will stop all over each other.

You next thing to try is to buy a cheap USB wireless card. It is very common for the built in cards to fail over time. As long as it works at all the vendor will say its fine.

Your last thing would be the router but before you replace that you may want to try borrow another pc to see if they both have problems.

Hard to say lots and lots of things cause this symptom

wireless signal

Except I can connect to the WiFi on all of my families phones, including mine, and my Xbox 360.
It is only my computer that is having difficulties, my grand mother who lives in our basement also has perfect internet connectivity.

We just replaced out router to hopefully fix it, but it didn't.

My idea is that somehow my computer is screwing up the process between connecting to the wireless network and the internet.

PLEASE help.

The clues are here. Will you see them?

Since everything else works, except this laptop, it points to a fault in the laptop.

Try this laptop at a free wifi spot for a test and arrange for repair.

Finally, you should be working at Future Shop my friend.

Future shop asked me if i wanted to keep it there for them to send to Gateway, and I said yes. They gave it back to me within a week because they "Couldn't fin anything wrong with it".
I gave it to them for them to fix, not to tell me nothing is wrong with it, because something is, or else i wouldnt be giving it to them..
Thanks a lot.

Let's work with that.

If the shops can't figure it out and we only have the clues given here, it points to an issue with that laptop.

I offered a test and you seem to have not done it. Maybe you should go to Future Shop (I like the one on 3rd in Richmond, BC!) and get another laptop (just kidding.)

But if you don't try what I suggest then I have very little to work with.

Is WEP considered "security enabled"?

Hint. It used to be.

Let's skip to either sharing the setup or what works pretty well. In short, router defaults, simple broadcasting SSID, WPA2-AES and only the changes the ISP requires. If you used something other than 0 to 9, a to z or A to Z in anything, let the forum know.
