Question

Cannot connect to internet with specific devices

Jul 20, 2013 10:22PM PDT

Hello guys,

I have stumbled upon a very strange situation ( at least from my point of view). Now i do not have the necessary know-how in networking issues so i cannot call myself an
knowledgeable in this area but i think i know enough to set up a simple internet connection. The problem is that a few days back i have tried to fix a friend's internet connection.

The connection itself is provided by the managers of the dorm through a cable connection in each room. We cannot get internet access immediately after connecting the computer , first we have to go to their website login with the user and password that was given to us and only then do we have internet access.

My friend connected her cable to a wireless router and connected all her devices through that( it is worth to know that you can connect with multiple devices from the same account - she has about 4 devices at each time- 2 laptops and an iphone and ipad). A few days back it stopped working. She cannot even access their website to log in.

Here is the really weird thing. No devices connect except for the ipad( and i think the iphone too but not sure).

I have tried the fallowing things:
- restart the rooter and connect again.
- shut down the rooter. waited for a few minutes and restarted.
- connected the cable directly to the laptop.
- connected the cable to different latops.
- tried troubleshooting in windows7
- replaced the cable
- asked if the connection was down for the other neighbors ( it wasn't only she had the problem)
- used the ipad to log out form all the accounts

None of these worked, please help. Thank you for your answers in advance.

Do you get any specific errors through your network settings or in your browser? Do you see any indication that you have an active connection (connected to network but no internet access, or indication lights where Cat 5 cable plugs in to PC). You should be able to see the status of your connection when you open the Network and Sharing Center from the Control Panel in Windows. Why not contact the dorm manager or network administrator first?

Mobile Devices

P.S. The iPad and iPhone are likely connecting through a nearby Wifi access point, or (more likely) have mobile data plans allowing them to connect.

Well it did say that it was connected but it had no access to internet. I looked up the packet transmission and it was not receiving any packets only sending. The ipad was connecting through the router i checked it was not from any other wifi connection. As for the administrators it is a bit of a problem because right around this time everyone is going on vacation and it is hard to get a response.

Wifi vs Cellular
Jul 21, 2013 2:14AM PDT

It's important to know that the iPad can be connected to Wifi and the cellular data network at the same time. It can show having Wifi service even if there is no internet service through that particular connection. Try turning off the cellular data network in the iPad's settings and see if you still have internet.

In any case, it doesn't appear that you will be able to repair this problem without your network administrator's assistance. If this is a college campus, there will certainly be someone available even during vacation periods, if only on weekdays.

As you are facing the issues with both the Laptops hence chances are very
rare that the issue lies in the Laptop, hence you can try to reset the
router from Pin Hole at the back of the router.
