Cannot connect to any Microsoft websites (Hotmail, msn)

May 11, 2005 6:26AM PDT

I have a Compaq Presario 8000T desktop, running Windows XP Professional, Pentium IV, 512 memory, 120 GB hard drive, using Internet Explorer 6 - just downloaded Service Pack 2 a few days ago (I had this problem before installing SVP2, and nothing changed - same problem after installing SVP2).

Last week, my computer could connect to any website, hotmail where my e-mail lives, and I route hotmail e-mail through Outlook 2003. I did not have a firewall installed on my machine(beyond any settings on the router). I was connected via Comcast cable/modem. A few days ago, I moved my computer to my fiance's house. He has AOL DSL through Linksys Router. He set up my computer - we can get to every website EXCEPT msn.com, hotmail.com, microsoft.com. BIZARRE!!! He has a Compaq laptop using wireless - we can connect to microsoft and hotmail through his machine, but not mine which is directly connected. Any ideas why this would happen? Currently, I have MS Firewall turned off while we troubleshoot this, and no third-party firewalls installed.

Again - I cannot connect through AOL DSL to microsoft websites!!
Thanks.

Problem SOLVED

My fiance logged into his Linksys Router IP and changed the MTU setting to 1400 - that worked. I can't get into yahoo.com now, but I DON'T CARE. As long as I can get into hotmail, I'm happy.

Thanks.

Just FYI.

Given that fix, it appears that some LINKSYS FIRMWARE do set the MTU to 1400 in the newer versions under some conditions.

Could the LINKSYS FIRMWARE be out of date in your router?
