Cannot boot up WinXP in any mode

May 27, 2005 2:44AM PDT

Recently I received a message that my Nortons Anti Virus caused an error and needed to be unistalled and then reinstalled. At that point my system was frozen so I rebooted but WinXP would not start. I get an error that my: c:\windows\system32\config\system....
file is missing or corrupt and that I should use the repair utility on my WinXP disk. Tried that and that will not work, cannot start in Safe Mode either. I do not want to have to reformat my HDD since I have quite a lot of data that I really need. Anybody out there have any suggestions?
Thanks for any help I get.
