Resolved Question

Cannot Accessories or System Tools

I have a Toshiba laptop model Satellite A105-S4002 running XP-Pro, wirelessly networked with a Win7 64-bit. On the Toshiba, I cannot bring up "Help and Support" or System Information. It may have been due to the steps I took under the thread "Suspect Conflicting Programs," but I doubt it. Still, I would like to restore all the features that came with my Toshiba, which is out of warranty.

You might try . . .

running System File Checker. From a command prompt type:

sfc /scannow (space between the c and the /)

This will look at the system files and repair if needed. You may need the XP CD.

Cannot Accessories or System Tools

I will use the command today, having used it for IE repair, not knowing it could repair Windows. From what I looked up, the command does not affect documents and other files; so there should be no need to back up these files.

If that's not sucessful . . .

you can do an "over the top" install of XP. I've done this before with the wife's PC. It's a non-destructive install of XP, leaving files and folders intact. With the PC running you insert the XP CD. It will auto-run and ask if you want to install XP. You say yes. The CD will reinstall all the system files and all needed to run XP.

As I say, I did this once with the wife's PC because of missing .dll and corrupt system files. Worked perfectly.

Cannot Accessories or System Tools

You must have expected this response. I used sfc at both the Run box and the Command prompt. Those Accessories must be unique to Toshiba. Is there anyone from Toshiba out there? I have the disc, with which come instructions to insert it at start-up, and then it the letter of the drive. The sfc command did not request the disc. Next I will use the disc your way. Thanks.

Auto-run does not work with this disc, which Toshiba supplied with the computer. You are making me regret that I did not make start-up discs of some kind. Anyway, I can still view the files on the disc. If I knew which .exe file to install without having it wipe out the whole installation, I would go ahead and install it. Do you the name of the correct file/files in which to install? Also, I should have mentioned that this computer has Recovery Console, which I would use if I could identify the right command.

Cannot Accessories or System Tools

I found a solution using Google to search for a fix for the Help and Support. It also fixed System Information. Thanks for trying. Do you have a job for me? Anyway, here is the solution for future reference: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm
