1. You can use the Add/Remove software in the Control Panel for Word or Office and do the "Repair" option.

2. If it starts and then exits now after you applies a recent (last year?) SR1 or SR2, then tell about that. There is an issue.

3. Millenium has no Word. For those, I just install Open Office from http://www.openoffice.org

Other things to try.

1. Try the debugging method in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=232605 to see if it as error in settings or normal.dot.

2. Locate the program file (might be winword.exe) that's started from the shortcut, and run it directly from Explorer to see if that makes any difference.

Hello! Thank you so very much for responding to my cry of help.

I tried option #1 and it said that the file I was looking for was invalid.

I am computer illiterate so I have no idea how to locate the program file and take it from there.

Do you by chance have the time to help me further by explaining in "Dummy Terms" how to do option 2?

Again, THNK YOU!!

The suggestion by Edward below sounds very good. Please let us know if it helps.

#1. An alternative method to #1. Drag and drop the line/icon from Start/Programs to your desktop (keep ctrl-key pressed: you'll see a plus indicating copy, not move; important detail!). Then rightclick on the icon on the deskop, choose Properties, and add /a at the end, so that it looks like
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Winword.exe" /a, as mentioned in the Microsoft article. Click OK on the properties sheet, then run it like any desktop icon by clicking on it.

#2. Start Explorer, browse to the folder it's in in the left pane (you get the folder name from #1, it's something like C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\ .Then browse to winword.exe in the right pane and click on the program to run it.

These are rather elementary things in Windows. If you don't master them, you should read a book like 'windows for dummies' or follow some introductory course.

What happens when you RIGHT click that icon that...
Feb 26, 2004 3:59AM PST

"shows up at the bottom of my screen but when I click it, nothing happens"?

If you get a context menu that includes MOVE, select to move then start using the DOWN cursor key by pressing it about 10-15 times then the left cursor key the same way. Eventually you should hopefully see the Word window hove into view at which point you press the enter key or continue moving it to where you want it. This happens to me once in a while using PhotoEditor which is a component of MS Office. Do KEEP TRACK of the number of clicks and in what direction as you may have to reverse them if the window is offscreen below or to the left instead of above and to the right.

I found long ago that it pays to explore the options a menu offers.
