That can happen under a few conditions.
1. Windows XP was freshly installed. No service packs.
2. Continuing on item 1, the Dell drivers have not been installed.
No need to write how to install these. Dell documents it as well as thousands of posts.

So, my Dell Dimension died when the power went out during a security software download. Seems I have some corrupted registries. I haven't backed up data in quite a while - and yes I realize I'm a **** for not doing it. Thanks for not adding to my problem by rubbing it in. I was told by a tech friend of mine that I could use an external enclosure to pull my files off my old drive and then reformat my drive (we've tried all the repair stuff - didn't work). The laptop I'm working on is an old Dell Latitude, pentium 3! I have one USB port in the back. When I got it all hooked up, I can find my drive in Disk Management, but it's listed as a removable drive (E), not a basic drive, and I can't access anything on the drive. Is there something I'm not doing right? Or does this mean that my drive is fried? Or does it have to do with my ancient laptop and the slow USB port? Any ideas would be great. We homeschool and I'm kind of stuck without all my files and info from my desktop computer.
