General discussion

Cannot access certain websites

Jun 22, 2007 12:28AM PDT

I have Verizon DSL and for quite some time, I have had trouble accessing certain websites.
(disney.com/ disneyshopping.com/ adobe.com)

I use Windows XP and my Java/Shockwave/Flash are ALL up to date.
I have a Linksys WRT54G router linking my Desktop and Laptop.
Both computers have this problem.

When trying to access these sites, it takes a long time them to even "partially" load. Even then, I cannot do anything on the sites.
If ANYONE can help, I'd appreciate it.
I tried to contact Verizon, but they were no help at all.
Thanks.

We know you have XP now but...
Jun 22, 2007 3:32AM PDT

is there some reason you didn't mention the browser you are using?

Have you tried using another browser?

Are you seeing any error messages or any indication of scripting problems?

Try ...
Jun 22, 2007 6:32AM PDT

1. Exit IE and Firefox.
2. In My Computer go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc folder
3. Find a file called hosts (not hosts.sam or so, just hosts without any extension). It might help to set Config Panel>Folder options to NOT hide extensions of known file types to find it.
4. Rename this file to hosts.txt
5. Start IE or Firefox and retry.
6. If no success, reboot and try again.

If the sites are accessible now, something in your hostsfile is blocking something. Then we'll have to find out what exactly.

Hope this helps.

It should work with ...
Jun 22, 2007 5:28PM PDT

XP and IE and Firefox right out of the box. So if it isn't hosts it's either other software interfering or your ISP (which is unlikely) or, as suggested below, some setting you're unaware of in your modem or router or so.

Do you have any Internet security software installed, like the run-time protection by Spybot, or Norton or McAfee Internet security? If so, try to disable or uninstall it to see if that makes a difference.

To exclude the ISP or router or router as a cause (if it's ADSL or cable), find a friend with a laptop and connect that in stead of your PC. That will be illuminating.

Hope this helps and please let us know.

Something Else To Try..
Jun 22, 2007 10:03AM PDT

First, download, install, update, then run a full system scan with the AVG Antispyware tool below.. Spyware and trojans can cause such issues.

Ewido/AVG Antispyware 7.5 Tool

If that doesn't help, then click on the link below to download and run the WinsockXPFix utility which should fix any irregularities with your connection.:

Hope this helps.

I still cannot get the www.disneyshoping.com website to load up on my computer. I've done exactly what EVERYONE has suggested but to no avail. I am asking for any other suggestions.

Well, Now It's Up To You..
Jul 21, 2007 3:01AM PDT

I've only got one more thing for you to do.. Please download and install the most recent Script engine from the link below:

Windows Script 5.6 for Windows XP and Windows 2000

Next, try unplugging the ethernet cable from the router and plug it directly into the modem.. I doubt that this is the reason for your problem, if it now works, then the router may need new firmware ..

If none of the above gets it done, then somewhere, the site appears to be blocked, either through a HOSTS file or some advertisement or site protection program.. You'll need to find it by checking again through all the possibilities mentioned in the posts here.. If you've installed the most recent version of Java and script engine, and all other sites on the internet are working fine and only that site is a problem, then you're going to simply continue hunting for the program that's blocking the site.

Hope this helps.

FINALLY FIXED!!!
Jul 23, 2007 4:24AM PDT

Simply upgrading the Linksys Firmware did the trick!
It's amazing how something so simple was the fix.
I feel so stupid that I didn't think about upgrading firmware, but sometimes the simplest things get overlooked.
Thank you SOOOOOO much Grif.
I really do appreciate it.

DSL?
Jun 22, 2007 1:45PM PDT

Some DSL providers require your MTU to be set to 1492.
If not symptom like yours happen.
I am with MTS Sympatico, and if my MTU is not set to 1492, I can not access Hotmail, or MSN messenger.

I Cannot Access the Wachovia Bank Web Site
Jun 25, 2007 8:12AM PDT

I'm reading this thread because it is similar, though not the same, as my problem. I try to access the Wachovia bank web site (www.wachovia.com). When I try logging in, I get a Security Alert with the message: The security certificate for this site has been revoked. The site should not be trusted.

I talked to Wachovia's IT department. They tell me that I have to upgrade to IE 7. I told them I didn't want to go to Version 7 because of numerous problems I've heard about. Well, the Wachovia "expert" told me that people all have different tastes and that I shouldn't listen to any of you on here ... LOL ... it's just like people and a movie; some like the movie and others don't.

Should I upgrade to IE 7? Is there something else I can do instead?

Thanks,
Amelia

Your Other Post Indicated: 'Resolved'...?
Jun 25, 2007 8:36AM PDT

What happened since then? Below is a link to our previous discussion:
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6121_102-0.html?forumID=45&threadID=253090&messageID=2519325#2519325

I've seen no banks that "require" IE7.. A "revoked" Security Certificate is the bank's problem, not your's. Are they saying I can't do online banking with any other version of Windows except XP or Vista? I don't think so... First though, try disabling your popup blockers and such temporarily.. Next, make sure to follow the instructions below to install the most recent version of Java and the Windows Script Engine. See if it helps your IE6 connect correctly.:

Click on the link to Sun's Java below, then click on the ''Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1'' download button. Follow the prompts, accept the license agreement, then download the full ''Windows Offline Installation'' file to your desktop,(about 15 MB), scan it with your antivirus (just to be sure it's clean). Once that's done, if you've already got a Sun Java version on the computer, (It appears like you may not though) open the Control Panel, double click on the ''Add/Remove Programs'' section, then uninstall all previous versions of the J2SE Java listed there. Once that's done, then install Java JRE 6u1 from the downloaded installer.

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

After that, IF YOU'RE USING Windows 2000 or XP, please download and install the updated Script engine from the appropriate link below:

Windows Script 5.6 for Windows XP and Windows 2000

After everything is installed, then open the Control Panel, double click on the ''Internet Options'' icon, then click on the ''Advanced'' tab. When that loads, scroll down to the ''Java(Sun)'' section and make sure there is a CHECK mark next to: ''Use JRE 1.6.0....''. Click on Apply. Then scroll to the ''Multimedia'' section and place a CHECK mark in the ''Play Sounds In Web Pages'', ''Play videos in Web Pages'', & ''Show pictures'' box and UNCHECK the box next to ''Show download Placeholders:'', then click on Apply, then Ok. Then click on the ''Security'' tab in ''Internet Options''. Once that opens, click on the ''Internet'' icon (the World globe), then click on the ''Custom Level'' button. When that loads, make sure the ''Reset to'' line says: ''Medium'', then click on the ''Reset'' button, then select ''Yes/OK''. It asks: ''Are you sure?''.

Hope this helps.

Wachovia Web Site - My Other Post Said Resolved
Jun 26, 2007 7:06AM PDT

Grif,
I thought it was resolved when Wachovia IT told me to contact my ISP and that the ISP had a "fix". Well, the ISP told me NO!

So, I went back to Wachovia IT and asked them again what the problem is with their web site. That's when the IT guy told me I needed to upgrade to IE7.

I called again last night and talked to a third person. She had me go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Privacy and set the setting to Medium (it was Low). Then, I went to the Security tab, highlighted Trusted Sites and clicked on Sites. I added:

https://www.wachovia.com

She also asked if I had deleted Cookie and Temp files, etc. I had just done that earlier.

And the outcome was ... NOTHING! It still didn't work. So, she told me that I either had to install IE7 or ask my ISP for a "fix". LOL!

Before I try your information, I'm going to call their IT department and talk to a supervisor about all of this #@!$$#%#!.

Thank you very much. I'll keep you "posted" errrrr...

I would drop them
Jun 26, 2007 8:22AM PDT

and get a better bank. There are many more out there. If they can't take care of the customer, then there is no need for them.

Remember, the customer is always right.

If they cannot accommodate the customer, they're gone.

Just my opinion.

Rick,
You're reading my mind. The customer service I've received from their IT department has been lousy. I went to their bank because they have free checking and the other services I use are free. However, now it's not free at all!

I use a small local Bank
Jun 26, 2007 1:50PM PDT

The small local bank here has a website. I can log in for FREE and check my balances. I think they charge a small fee for online banking, not quite sure.

I have a PayPal account. I linked the PayPal account to the checking account. I get no fees for using PayPal, My banks ATM or other service fees. I only get charged if I use an ATM that's not theirs.

I have automatic deposit. I use my Success Card(debit) to purchase my items.

Hope this helps.

Also have probs w/ wachovia
Jul 3, 2007 8:56AM PDT

I just installed a new router this week (end of June 2007), and have also had problems logging onto Wachovia's web site (have tried w/ Safari, Firefox, and IE for Mac) and could not log onto the "BillPay" section of their web site. IE even gave me a could not obtain a secure connection message. HOWEVER, when I logged on from a direct to DSL connection at my neighbor's house (we use the same DSL service) I had no problems connecting. I wonder what this means...

Also have probs w/ wachovia
Jul 3, 2007 9:52AM PDT

I'm not very technical, but it's obvious that the Wachovia web site is the problem, not any customers' computers. I am going to my local branch tomorrow and complain. I use BillPayer, but I cannot even log in at all. If I find out something, I'll post it here.

BTW, did you call Wachovia's 800 # and ask them. I'm just curious, even though they were useless. The 800 # I have is 800 950-2296.

Amelia

Re: Also have probs w/ wachovia
Jul 5, 2007 11:30PM PDT

I haven't called them, but will give that a shot, suspect that being a Mac user I will have even less luck. I like Wachovia for the free checking, and for some reason my town is swimming w/ Wachovias so it is the most convenient bank for me. Will let you know what I find out...

I will also see if plugging my DSL line back into my computer directly makes a difference and report back.

ANY help with ORIGINAL problem??
Jul 6, 2007 2:15AM PDT

Can ANYONE give me some help on the ORIGINAL problem at hand?
I tried to start this thread to solve my problem and maybe help out someone with the same problem.
Now it's a bash Wachovia thread.
I'm not trying to be nasty, but this problem is killing me and I need help.
Sorry and thanks.

Sorry, I can only say
Jul 6, 2007 2:36AM PDT

Make sure that you have Java

http://www.bodo.com/javame.htm

If NOT download it here

http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Check your ActiveX(some websites use this to communicate)

http://pcpitstop.com/testax.asp

Now just to make sure, use this tool to update everything

http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/

Once everything is updated, restart your computer and then try to access the website.

I have Verizon DSL. I do NOT use the firewall in the Westell Modem/router. I use a Netgear router with WPA security engaged and use Zone Alarm as my firewall.

I can get to the website but since I do NOT have an account there, I can go no further.

Sorry about the other part. This should get you there.

Help with your original problem ...
Jul 6, 2007 3:30PM PDT

I'm sure you're not trying to be nasty. Your original post had several replies, but I guess the information didn't resolve your problem. I would suggest you post your original question again and see if someone can help. I wonder if you should try another forum, which might have more people with knowledge about your problem. I'm not sure what forum to suggest.

Grif gives great advice (he's from CNET) and I thought he had replied to your question. Ask him for more help.

It seems that there are several Wachovia customers who are all having problems accessing their web site. That's why we've been appending posts to my original post about it.

Good luck,
Amelia

Additional information
Jul 6, 2007 3:44PM PDT

The Disney website does use Flash Player

using the browser you are trying to access the Disney website with,

go to http://www.adobe.com and download the Flash Player.

If you are using Mozilla Firefox and using NoScript, enable scripting for go.com and dolimg.com

If using Flashblock, after you allow scripting for go.com and dolimg.com, scroll down the page and you'll see the arrow. Click on it and it will load.
