Power Switch

That is not much information.
You need to eliminate some possibilities.
The first suspect would be the power switch which is a slide switch.
Do you find the power switch in the "on" or "off" position after the batteries are drained.
If you put tape over the switch when you finish using it, do the batteries drain.

Over what period of time does this occur?
Some types of batteries will discharge just sitting unused in the camera.
..Older NiMH batteries do this.
..Try using Alkaline batteries, as they don't drain just sitting unused in the camera.
What type of batteries are you using?
If the batteries are rechargeable, how old are the batteries.
..NiMH batteries tend to fail after a few years.
..Usually only one of the batteries will fail, but you need to replace the whole set.

camera turns itslef on. Panasonic Lumix DMC LZ1

Even if the camera is switched off it turns itself on. It then becomes almost impossible to turn off without extracting the batteries. This is constantly happening and it doesn't matter which batteries you are using.

I still need to know

Trying to determine if the power switch is creeping to the "on" position.
Either caused by faulty power switch or by putting the camera in a bag or pocket.

If the camera actually turned "on", I would think the lens would be extended when you see the camera later.
Is the Lens extended?

Or is the switch "off" all the time and the batteries are being drained by a short circuit in the camera?

Either one will require repairs by Panasonic Repair Center.

If that is the case, you may want to consider replacing the camera rather than having it repaired.
