The United States and Canada share the worst records among the G8 countries for dealing with climate change, lagging far behind such leaders as Germany and the United Kingdom, according to a report to be released today by the World Wide Fund for Nature, an international environmental group.
Commissioned jointly by WWF and Allianz Group, one of the world's largest insurance companies, the report evaluated measures that the eight major industrialized countries have undertaken to fight climate change, and ranked their relative performance. It's being issued to coincide with the annual G8 summit of Western leaders that starts Wednesday in Germany, where global warming is one of the top agenda items.
Among the advanced countries, the report singled out three for their particularly poor records - Canada, the United States, and Russia - saying their policies to fight global warming aren't sufficient to contain the expected rise in the world's temperatures to 2 degrees Celsius. Many scientists predict that if the amount is exceeded, it could lead to catastrophic climate change.
