Can you suggest a nice budget SD camcorder for my dad?

by Dacvak / December 29, 2008 3:35 PM PST

My dad's birthday is coming up and I've decided it's time for him to upgrade from his mini-VHS almost decade-old camcorder to something a bit newer. It doesn't need to be HD, because he doesn't even have an HDTV. SD will be great.

I would like it to have either HDD or SD support, though, as that seems to be better than DVD and Mini-DV for storage reasons. He's not computer-inept, so he'll be able to handle that.

I'm really looking for something in the $300 range, but I haven't ever shopped for camcorders, so I don't know what I'm exactly getting into. Use your own discretion and help me out!

Thanks!

What do you mean by, "like it to have either HDD or SD support, though, as that seems to be better than DVD and Mini-DV for storage reasons"?

The Canon FS10 and FS11 meet your criteria (as do a couple from Flip and Aiptek, but those generally don't make the short list for a couple of reasons).

I realize what I wrote was a bit confusing after reading it. Let me rephrase: I was a Standard Definition camcorder with either Hard Drive or Secure Digital (SD) card support. But now, I'm really looking at whatever.
