Question

Can you help me pick my next phone?

Feb 16, 2015 2:27AM PST

Hey guys!

I do not know much about phones and I would like to buy a new one. I would really appreciate your advice on what to buy.

My budget is:

204 USD
180 EUR
133 GBP

I want the phone to be new and I'd prefer something with qwerty, but I like touchscreen as well.

I need to use it for skype, finding my way around (gps is a must), browsing the internet, e-mails and text messages. I am not interested in games or photos or amazing sound.

I want it to have a good OS without lags or errors Happy

Thank you for your help!
Alex

Answer
The QWERTY alone shoud nail it.

So with that you may be looking at a Blackberry. Who else has QWERTY?

I would consider touchscreen as well

I am thinking of getting a qwerty, but I am happy to consider a touch screen as well Happy

Since it's skype your options are still limited.

Why? I think you'll need a very current gen dual or quad core to make it work well. I use Groove IP Lite on an old HTC Evo 4G and it's barely working. So you'll need about double the horsepower to be happy.

I can't guess what country or carrier you want so I can't be specific.

At 204USD there are no good new candidates. Maybe you have to check out the refurb of Glyde market?

-> AMAZING SOUND? On a phone? I've yet to read a review that called a phone's speakers amazing.

Let's hear from you what phone met your criteria short of the price.

So far ...

So far I am thinking of Samsung Galaxy Grand Lite I9060 (if i remember right) or Lenovo A850, Blackberry Q10 with a strech of my budget or even a Motorola G 2014 The last two cost a bit more than I am ready to afford but ...

You need to find reviews on each model.

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_grand_neo-5958.php and others find mixed reviews. My take is that you'll find that video Skype is going to be a stretch without testing on your choice of carrier (no matter which model.)

http://www.gsmarena.com/lenovo_a850-5689.php seems to peg this as an older model. I'm going to write "avoid models from 2013 or prior" due to your Skype comments. Same goes for the Q10. http://blogs.skype.com/2013/04/25/say-hello-to-skype-on-blackberry-q10/

Now the Moto G is discussed on http://community.skype.com/t5/Android/Skype-on-Moto-G/td-p/2117289 so you may want to ask around which model does this WITHOUT having to run older versions.

Be aware that Microsoft owns Skype so there's a gorilla that has it's own agenda. Take another look at Groove.
