I also do similar without on my machines but keep in mind this is NOT A BACKUP! Only a quick second copy. For a backup you need multiple copies of the media (you have one) and you need WRITE PROTECTION to stop a virus/worm from wiping out the backup.
Also the file system used on the external must be something robust. FAT32 is known to vanish.
If all you have is digital pictures and 2 movies, then I bet you can have a proper backup on 2 to 3 DVDRs. That's cheap and safe backup.

I have a laptop and desktop, both Windows XP and have never backed up either system (!). Not sure really where to start, but from what I've read I should get an external hard drive. Can I back up both systems to this one drive? I have all my digital pics and a movie or two on my desktop, not too much on my laptop. I don't want to replicate what I have on my desktop to my laptop.
Any advice? Backup suggestions?
