General discussion

can video from camcorder be transfered to laptop via USB3

Jan 29, 2006 4:45AM PST

My son is buying a new camcorder JVC GR-D290US which uses USB, firewire and ilink. He has a new laptop with USB 2 and 3 but no firewire. Does anyone know if he will be able to transfer video using his USB, or should he get firewire card, and will he be able to install himself (not too techie)? Thanks!

What is USB 3?

While some camcorders do transfer video via USB, most if not all owners lament the lower quality video. Since it's a laptop without firewire, you can add firewire with a PC-Card.

Firewire Card

For what it's worth, I recently purchased a firewire card/firewire cable package for around $20. It took me all of five minutes to install. If you are not a "techie" or don't know how to do it, most user manuals will describe how to install cards. It's definitely worth doing, though. USB simply doesn't work very well.

I was reading the specs from his laptop, it read: USB 3 (on next line) high speed Universal Serial Bus 2.0, laughs on me, I thought it was a new USB!! Thanks for all of the replies, looks like he'll be better off with the firewire, hope it's as easy as it sounds! Thanks again.
