Can't write to external drive on network

by Frieser / February 5, 2010 2:57 AM PST

I recently set up a home network with a Belkin N+ router. I have been having troubles with the external hard drive I have connected to the router. The hard drive was initially set up on a machine running XP and now my computers run Vista (not sure if this makes a difference). All of the folders on the hard drive are marked and read only and I can not change them. If the external drive is connected directly to my CPU, I have no problem creating folders and writing files, but when it is connected to my router and I try to create a new folder on the hard drive, it says that I do not have access to do so. In addition, I can not use the the hard drive with the Windows back-up feature either becasue I do not have permission to write on it. I have worked around it so far by connecting to one of the computers and simply sharing it over the network, but I don't know if there are any disadvantages to this or if it will work just fine. Any advice is greatly apprecaited.
Thanks
Tim

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
