Can't use Disk Defragmenter because of Checkdisc (Chkdsk/f)

Jun 25, 2006 8:07AM PDT

When I try to run disk defragmenter a window comes up and says, 'Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume (C). Please run Chkdsk/f.
I'm running XP Service Pack 2
When I run Chkdsk/f from the run window the pop up window says,
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? Y/N
I type in Y and hit enter but the next time I boot up the computer it says exactly the same thing - no changes.
What can I do?

Generally, you run chkdsk c: /f from the command window, or chkdsk with repair box checked from the properties of the drive My Computer.

That should be all.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265 gives some more details for XP. I found it by googling XP RUN CHKDSK. If you happen to have another version of Windows you might be able to find a more appropiate help yourself, if necessary.

HOW TO FIX chkdsk /f error when you try to defragment
Apr 14, 2010 2:32AM PDT

Go to - MY COMPUTER
Right Click - LOCAL DISK (CHappy
Select - PROPERTIES
Select - TOOLS - CHECK NOW.

Select both options "Automatically Fix File System Errors" (which means the chkdsk/f (fix)and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" .

A new screen will ask you if you want to schedule a check disk at startup - choose Y for YES
Turn off your computer completely (Start-> Turn-Off Computer-> Turn-Off ).

Then push the power button to start again your computer and you will see the scan disk started. Wait for the scan disk to finish .

After the scan disk is finished you will be able to do the defragmentation of your computer (Start->All Programs -> Accessories->System Tools-> Disk Defragmenter )

Good luck !

What I did to fix Disk Defragmenter and CHKDSK issues
Apr 14, 2010 3:25AM PDT

I got the error message tried everything suggested on these forums, tried scheduling it from Tools - this caused my PC to black screen at bootup, I don't mean BSOD, I mean it would not come on at all! Horrible panic on that day, and I resolved by putting in an XP Install CD (the first one I found, not even the one for my PC), and rebooting. There was some interplay between the CD and the HD at boot up, and I got it boot, then XP screen splashed and I could breathe again.
Next time I did what I saw written up here (good article!): http://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=5097 - I put in any old XP install CD, pressed F10 for recovery options, got the command prompt, ran chkdsk /r and then I was able to run Disk Defragmenter.
This is the easiest way, when using the Tools option won't work, so find or borrow an OS install CD!
