Can't upgrade from avg8 to avg11:Severity: Error

Feb 23, 2011 1:31PM PST

Hello.
I am running Windows XP SP3.

I was unable to upgrade my AVG 8 (free) installation to AVG 2011 (free) because I kept getting the following error:

Severity: Error
Error Code: 0xC0070643
Error Message: General internal error.
Additional message: MSI Engine: Failed to initialize the package.
Context: Initialization

I have run:
avg_remover_stf_x86_2011_1184.exe
CCleaner
and rebooted

I now have no Anti-Virus on my computer Sad

I have uploaded log files to:
http://www.woofiles.com/dl-229426-sScZtJYJ-AVGInstLog.cab

I like AVG and do not want to switch to another program. How do I fix this?

Thanks.

Hello muffin2day,

is the error still the same, when running the AVG installation wizard after remover finished its job?

If so, please follow these steps properly. When you will be downloading AVG installation file, choose the second or third link.

What is the current situation?

Thank you

Any ideas?
Thanks

Hello muffin2day,

please provide us with the most recent installation log files for analysis (more information here). What exact installation file have you used when trying to install AVG 2011? Please tell us its full file name.

Thank you.

Hello muffin2day,

The download link is not working for me, could you please try to use some different file hosting service? (e.g. rapidshare, megaupload).

Thank you

Hello muffin2day,

unfortunately provided installation logs did not show possible culprit of this uncommon behavior (installation fails too early, very probably due to some conflict with other application).

Please provide us with MSinfo32 output for analysis of possible conflict application.

Is possible to install AVG using full installation file from this website? (use second link - avg_free_x86_all_2011_1204a3402.exe)

Thank you

Hello muffin2day,

at first please update used ZoneAlarm firewall to latest version.

According to next analysis and digging in provided information, it looks like Microsoft Installer is incorrectly working (corrupted or hijacked). Please repair Windows Installer by following this Microsoft website
- instead of older MS installer in method 2, please use the latest one (last file on the list).

Then you can check your computer with AVG RescueCD.

What is the current situation?

Thank you

I just updated ZoneAlarm (in the past I have tried installing AVG with ZoneAlarm disabled-same error).

I repaired the MS installer with the link you provided.

I downloaded the rescue disk. Should I scan all the drives or just the boot up one?

Thanks.

Hello muffin2day,

Please scan all computer drives, disable ZoneAlarm, try to install again and provide us with fresh installation log files if the installation fails again.

Thank you

Hello muffin2day,

I have passed provided information to our product specialists for closer analysis.

In the meantime, could you please follow these special steps to install AVG 2011 through separate MSI packages:

1) Extract already downloaded installation file avg_free_x86_all_2011_1204a3402.exe (for example with 7zip)
2) Navigate into extracted folder and run these binaries:

vc_red.msi
COREx86.msi
AVGx86.msi

What is the current situation?

Thank you for your cooperation

Can't upgrade from avg8 to avg11:Severity: Error
Feb 28, 2011 12:39AM PST

To remove all AVG I first ran:
avg_remover_stf_x86_2011_1184.exe

I then ran:
vc_red.msi
it finished with no indications of doing anything.

next was:
COREx86.msi
It ran till the Finish button.

Last was:
AVGx86.msi
When I started it, it said "AVG 2011 Setup Wizard ended prematurely"
I clicked the Finish button (the only option) and then it closed.

It does not appear anything has been installed.

Please let me know what to do next.

Hello muffin2day,

Please proceed as follows to allow us to analyze the situation further:
1) Delete contents of following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp

2) Run AVGremover once again.

3) Create backup of registry key - export the key and save it to some location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer

4) Download 'MSIreg.reg' file from here, import it(doubleclick on it and confirm changes) and restart your computer.

4) Run Process monitor and then run AVG installation package once again.
After installation fails, save an output from process monitor and provide us with it.

5) Also provide us with all installation log files from this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MFAData\logs\

6) Inform us when exactly installation fails, what installation window is displayed?

Compress the process monitor output and log files, upload them to online storage and provide us with the link.

Thank you for your cooperation.
