Question

Can't update Windows XP Home

Aug 7, 2012 11:08PM PDT

I had to replace my HD and installed Win XP2 on the new drive. I went on the internet and then to windows updates. It seemed to have started checking then I got this message. "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view " I tried several more tomes but nothing. Can someone please help?

Answer
Sorry no. But tell the forum about drivers.

XP comes with so few drivers that such an update will fail. Tell more.

I'm confused. I had the OS on my old HD and had no problems with windows updates.

The OS is only that.

XP as an OS does indeed run fine. However without the drivers for the hardware Windows Udpate (WU) does fail.

I asked for you to tell more and I can't find any post about the machine, make and model. It's a shame this is missing along with details such as "I used the factory supplied XP CD and Drivers" because for now what you have told only has me nodding "Yes, it should fail."

Can't update Windows XP Home

My machine is home built. I've had it for a long time. It has a AMD 1.6 Sempron processor. 2048gb ram. 80gb hd with 55gb free space. Windows XP Home service pack2 which I purchased. The motherboard drivers were installed from the disk that came with it. If you need more let me know.

You won't know if drivers are missing without checking

device manager. Yellow or red in the listing is a flag that some hardware wasn't configured or isn't working. Check there to confirm.

There are no yellow or red markers in device manager.

Answer
Here's a option . . .

I'm assuming when you say "SP2" you're referring to XP SP2. If so you can go here:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24

And download and install SP3. Don't worry about the Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers, it's the same for all. I downloaded it and burned it to a CD. After it's installed and running, try the updates.

(NT) I meant "XP2"

I went to that link but when I tried to install it a Message came up saying that Windows XP-KB936992-SP3-X96-ENU.EXE is not a valid WIN 32 application

That's a download error.

Try to download it again, saving it to your hard disk. Then run.

But X96 isn't good. it's X86.

Did that and got the same message. That 96 was an error, it was 86.

2 months ago, it was perfect. Try with a friend or at work and copy from your USB-stick.

Answer
Let's cover off a few other causes.
Aug 9, 2012 5:19AM PDT

1. The download is corrupt. (Kees noted that)
2. There are other issues with the machine.
a. Trojan, virus, spyware. Try Grif's note at http://forums.cnet.com/7726-6132_102-5098912.html?tag=posts;msg5099421
b. Chdksk needs to be run. Do the check!
3. The machine has some other hard issue. Given the clues so far I can't point at anything. You may have a failing this or that but the clues from you are pretty sparse.

Got ahold of Microsoft and they fixed the problem. There was something wrong with the downloader. Thanks for all your help and effort.

I have encountered that

You've loaded an older service pak and the XP updater has changed since then. No longer can you rely on it automatically recognizing that deficiency. Look here for the solution. Your file name is WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

Windows XP updation
Aug 14, 2012 3:36PM PDT

1. Open Interent Options
2. On the General Tab choose Settings under Temporary Internet Files
3. Then click on View Objects.
4. Right Click WuWebControl Class and choose remove
5. Right Click MuWebControl Class and choose remove
6. Delete the file c:\windows\system32\wuweb.dll
7. Delete the file c:\windows\system32\muweb.dll

Those are the steps it's talking about. If you already did those then you have uninstalled Active X controls. All you need to do now is download a Fresh New one at Windows Update.
