Question

Can't update Netflix app

Feb 14, 2015 12:39AM PST

OK., her's a challenge...I have a Samsung BD FM59 that I purchased from Walmart a while back. In the past 8 months or so, I have to re-log onto Netflix almost every time I use it, as well as the player just randomly turning off. this is a major PITA, so I eventually called Netflix. We checked the app version (4.0.3), and they told me that I needed to be at at least 4.0.6, or I was going to have problems. Back to Samsung. I have since been with "tech support" twice, going through the complete re-set of the machine, etc. Nope. This player WILL NOT UPGRADE THE APP! So I guess I am expected to just live with it?I s it just this particular line of players, or is this a problem with all Samsung products?

Answer
Ask samsung how to do this trick.
Feb 14, 2015 12:43AM PST

On some models you can change the country and that will force a reload of the netflix app when you put it back to your original country. I am not samsung support but note this if they didn't try that.

If all fails, you have a fine reason for return.

Can't update Netflix app to 3.0.6

Unfortunately, this model doesn't have the capability of changing region codes....

Internet... use it
Feb 14, 2015 9:36PM PST

Step 1: hold down the STOP button for 8 seconds to perform a hardware reset

Step 2: After 30 seconds, you can turn on the unit again

Step 3: You need to manually set DNS on your service, then finish the setup

Step 4: Then do the >> 2 8 9 << code to choose country.

Step 5: Then ok the smarthub agreements. Update apps. Done.

Set Country Code?
Feb 15, 2015 5:09AM PST

Is that the "country code hack"...? Please explain, as I have already performed a hardware reset when dealing with the Samsung Tech on the phone..)which didn't work). But that did NOT include a way to change the code...I'm really stoked......if you would, please give me steps...Happy

Still no joy...
Feb 15, 2015 8:59AM PST

Well, I was able to bring up the codes..(you don't have to do a hardware reset...just do the 289 thing at the Home screen, and it gives you the list, but I did a did reset anyway..) Unfortunately, even after stripping this unit completely of all apps (I chose Australia once), it merely put the old version back on....Sorry...apparently this specific unit just can't be upgraded. It's too old now I think for any warranty coverage. Thanks anyway. Does anyone have a model that is higher up on the food chain? I like Samsung products, but this is pretty bad, and I am pretty disappointed...obviously, the only way to rectify this is to get another player. Any recommendations?

Netflix controls which version.

Samsung is an intermediary here. Next call? Netflix.

Ok, this is what I have.

Samsung BD-P1590, I had this for many years now, ever since Netflix started the streaming business or close to it. I never had to go through what you have to do. I think the player have its firmware updated about 4 time since I got it but I really didn't have to do any. All it tells me is not to turn off the unit while it's being updated.

Glad I went with Roku, Fire TV solutions. I've lose faith in Samsung's continued gaffes in their Smart Hub.

Samsung quality....
Feb 16, 2015 3:29AM PST

Pretty much lacking ...the guy at Netflix said it was, by far, the one brand they get the most calls about...I tried to maybe get warranty work, but I can't find my receipt...DOH'..The Netflix guy said the one brand they see the least of, is Panasonic and LG...so............

Actually I have reservations when the TV holds the code.
Feb 16, 2015 3:37AM PST

Every maker seems to produce then stop development on the code once the TV ships. That is the nature of the beast since the revenue dries up.

Samsung is trying hard to get a cut of the VOD market by (wedging?) their Smart Hub between the apps and the content. Every Samsung TV with a web browser has failed to let me browse without a smart hub login. Mind you I haven't tried this on new models but it seems odd that you have to log into the mothership like that.

Maybe a TV should be TV and a BD player just a player.
