Can''t uninstall Yankee Clipper

Sep 29, 2004 1:42AM PDT

My problem is that when I try to uninstall Yankee Clipper, either using Add/Remove or the uninstall program I installed, Advanced Uninstaller Pro, I get the message from Wise Uninstall: Could not open INSTALL.LOG file.

After getting my new XP computer, I downloaded the clipboard utility Yankee Clipper, which I used a lot on my older computer. However, I found out I downloaded the wrong version rather than the one I wanted and was used to. So I uninstalled it yesterday morning and instead installed the version I wanted. Then, I got to messing around trying to get YC on my startup and Quick Launch. Somehow, I messed things up so that YC wouldn't work. So I attempted to uninstall this second version of YC (the one I wanted). Add/Remove went through the usual procedure as though the uninstall worked fine. But it didn't. YC was no longer in Add/Remove, but it was big as life everywhere else although it still worked poorly. Then, I used System Restore to go back to yesterday morning before I uninstalled the version I didn't want. I wanted to start all over. So I tried to uninstall that version so I could newly install the good version. But now the bad version won't uninstall. When I try to do that via Add/Remove, I get a Wise Uninstall error saying "Could not open INSTALL.LOG file. So I installed Advanced Uninstaller Pro. But it got the same message.

So I guess I'm wondering how I can get INSTALL.LOG to open. While I have no idea what I did to mess it up, right now I'm more interested in solving the problem than finding out how it occurred. It occurred basicly because I got to doing things without being sure of whether it was the right thing to do or not.

I have no idea what to do now. For one thing, I wonder if the error message means that the Add/Remove program now won't work for anything, or if that error message just applied to YC. I've thought about downloading free uninstaller but I prefer not to do anything till I can get some expert input.

"This is FREE software- not free to try, not free to download, it's just plain free. (Well, not quite.)

* Check out the screenshot
* Enjoy ... You MUST email us if you have any problems or wish to make comments about the program."

Try that.

Have you tried picking a different restore point? If that doesn't work, try installing then uninstalling the program you don't want. Sometimes a program can get a corruption that won't allow you to uninstall without installing over itself to replace the missing files.

A word of advice, be careful what you download and use. Many programs you used with your old operating system may not work with XP. I'm not sure what that program does that is required with your daily computer use. But it sounds like it's more trouble than it's worth.

I tried to reinstall and then uninstall but it didn't work so I am waiting to hear back from the Yankee Clipper people.

More than you wanted to know: As my reluctant memory slowly releases additional info to me, it looks like what I did was mistakenly install an old version of Yankee Clipper, called Plus. When I went to remove it, Add/Remove seemed to work okay. Plus disappeared form the Add/Remove list and from Programs. But, unknown to me, it was still on my computer. Then, I downloaded what I want, YCIII and it was all that appeared in Programs. When I did some things I should not have, I tried unsuccessfully to remove YCIII, wanting to reinstall it. But yesterday morning, both YCIII and Plus showed up in the Programs list and the Add/Remove list. Then, YCIII uninstalled okay, but not Plus.

I finally deleted all YCIII and all Yankee Clipper Plus files and reinstalled YCIII. I can't find any vestiges of Yankee Clipper Plus in Explorer, Programs or Add/Remove so I assume that I'm rid of that unwanted guest. And YCIII seems to be working fine.

Thanks for the help. grandpaw
