Can't start Windows

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium, SP2. I was looking through a CD of photos when a blue screen, filled with text, appeared. It disappeared very quickly so I was unable to read most of it, but the gist was that Windows could not start. It then went to repair mode, told me it couldn't repair, then asked my to choose how to start Windows. I tried several options, all with the same results and it just kept going round and round.
I thought I'd try System Restore so restarted in Safe mode, clicked Control Panel/System/System Protection. This is supposed to give me a choice of drives etc but all that opens is Systems Properties so I can't do anything.
Help will be much appreciated.

If you can get to that screen, Vista (windows) is starting.

When I turned my machine on this morning, it started normally - it's as though it fixed itself overnight while switched off. I'm a little suspicious though, as it started up really quickly - as though it were asleep rather than fully shut down. Would it be a good idea to do a system restore anyway?

Not in my view.

If something works, I resist the urge to fix it.

(NT) Thanks - I'll leave well enough alone.
