1) File and Print Sharing enabled on the Exceptions tab of Windows Firewall
2) Zone Alarm turned off or the appropriate exception for file and print sharing enabled.
3) Workgroup names the same.
4) enable Simple File Sharing (http://www.petri.co.il/enable_simple_file_sharing_in_windows_xp.htm)
5) something needs to be shared.
Things to try:
1) From a command prompt try pinging the other computer
2) Same command prompt try "net view" without the quotes.
First things first: XP Firewalls ARE OFF!! OFF in Advanced, Exceptions--everywhere!
I have a PC running Windows XP Pro (&Zone Alarm Pro) connected by cable to a wireless gateway.
I have a laptop running Windows XP Home (& McAfee Security Center), wireless.
The wireless router and laptop have found each other so Internet access is not an issue.
This is, of course, that the two PC's don't see each other. I ran the XP wizard on both. The desktop that is wired to the router I chose "this PC is connected to the Internet through another computer or a residential gateway".
The laptop - well I'm not sure how it's connected. It connects wirelessly, so technically it doesn't connect through a gateway, or does it?
Either way the File & Printer Sharing and Client for Microsoft Networks, and TCP/IP (and the 4th item in that list of check boxes) are all enabled for both connections.
The laptop found itself but can't access itself. The desktop didn't find anything.
I read in other posts that this comes up alot. I don't want to be a bother but I can't find "Stickys" in this forum.
What do I have to do with the firewall?
What am I missing with the networks?
Is there a good tutorial that you can refer me to?
Thanks for the help,
PO
