can't see an XP PC from a Vista PC

by daggsntezza / March 18, 2007 5:30 PM PDT

I have recently upgraded to Vista Ultimate on a HP Media Centre PC (m7377a), and all is working great EXCEPT I can't see any other PC's on my home network (i.e. the Vista PC cannot see or be seen). All this was working fine when all PC's were strictly XP Pro.

I can still "see" my laptop from the other XP desktop, and vice versa, but neither of these can see the Vista...

I have tried all recommended troubleshooting, and even "removed" the network settings and re-instated, but no good.

I have updtaed all drivers on the HP box to Vista versions.

Has anybody else experienced this, and how did you fix?

Check the firewall
by kdot! / March 21, 2007 2:03 PM PDT

I had trouble seeing my Win2000 and WinXP public folders from the new Vista system. It turned out to be a firewall that was enabled by the trial version of Norton Antivirus. As soon as I disabled the Norton firewall, all my systems became visible and I had no trouble copying files and sharing printers between the three.

Thanks kdot!

I am only using the vista firewall, and Comodo Pro on the XP (both of which have been configured for the local network).

I will try the suggestion form the next post (a kb from billsoft)

I had the same problem. I went to the microsoft web site and asked about it and it told me to download a file to install on your xp machine so that vista can see it and vise versa. it worked great for me. this is due to vista use a new ipv 6 compliance when xp and earlyier use only ipv 4 compliance. go to this link for the download and more info.

I downloaded and installed the (supposed) fix, but I still cannot see the XP PC's from the Vista PC (or vice versa). I have checked all settings, and re-checked. I have even tried to join all PCs to a new workgroup, but still no good. Any other suggestions?
