can't save my notepad messages

Mar 14, 2012 7:19AM PDT

I typed a message in notepad.I want to save it to 'my documents' so when i x out of notepad it first gives me the option to save the message.I select 'my document' then click save but it doesn't do anything. The windows involved in the process don't disappear and I get no indication that the process was completed and when I look in 'my documents' it is not there.

What happens

if you try the old fashioned way?

Go to File > Save as, then name the file and click Save.

Glad you have a workaround.

I'm sure your method should still work though.

Just a thought. We know that inside applications, when we save files we sometimes have to change the location of where the files are going to be saved to, and the application will remember that "last saved to" location. For example, if you used Notepad at some time and saved a txt file to 'some other' location, then the next time you open Notepad to save a file, it will save to the last-used location.

So, I wonder if that happened to you? If you know the name of one of the txt files you are missing, use your Start > Search option to search for the name of that file. You may find it saved somewhere else.

It happens to me often. Happy

Another Possible Solution
Aug 16, 2012 3:00AM PDT

I had the same issue with notepad in XP. Tried to "save as" to my desktop several times, but it refused to save the file. Finally realized that I attempted to save the file name with a question mark at the end of the file name. Certain symbols such as: / \ : * ? " < > | are not allowed to be saved in the name of the file. I figured this out only after I attempted to change/edit the file name.

Hope this helps someone else.
