Can't remove programs from Control Panel

Apr 16, 2015 11:33AM PDT

I have a Dell Vostro 1510 laptop which is now 7 years old and has been giving me problems for quite sometime now from the computer freezing up to making me go through an extensive system check for not shutting down properly to another lengthy system check running a check on drive C but the latest problem now is I cannot remove or uninstall programs from Control Panel. My laptop's OS is Windows Vista 32 bit and my current browser is Google Chrome although I have started using Mozilla Firefox now..

I tried removing McAfee Site Advisor last night and planned to reinstall it because at present there are no notifications letting me know which websites links are safe; whether they're green; yellow; or red nor is the McAfee Site Advisor balloon appearing at the top of the page of the site I'm on showing what color it is.

I just went back to Control Panel and clicked to remove McAfee Site Advisor again; it's been 12 hours since I tried to remove it earlier and this message still pops up saying "Please wait until the current program is finished uninstalling or being changed."

So I went to McAfee's website and tried to install the newest version of Site Advisor thinking it would override my installed version but it wouldn't; that same message appeared. So just for a test I tried removing another program; I couldn't do that either. What could be the problem here? Should I do a defrag or scan disk like I use to do on my WIN XP desktop years ago or should I start shopping for a new laptop? This crap is getting old.

Mcafee burrows deep. To remove Mcafee I have to use their product remove tools.

Sorry but as that tool is well noted on the web, I'll stop here.

So my inability to remove McAfee Site Advisor from my computer could also be the reason why I cannot remove any other programs from my computer's Control Panel? Since you answered my post I wish you would have recommended another good yet stable entry level laptop to consider purchasing to replace this Dell Vostro 1510. I've priced new laptops over on Dell's Small Business Division's website; the Dell Vostro model line is no longer being sold by Dell Computers but there are other models available which are much more expensive than this laptop which I have now.

Sorry to read that.

Yes, there are many apps that no longer remove via the control panel. Mcafee being one of them. Hopefully you can remove it with the usual tool folk note from Mcafee and then you can try again on the other app.

If the other app doesn't remove, again it may take a tool from that maker or something like Revo or a manual uninstall.

As to your PC shopping I recall you have requirements that make shopping hard. If I recall, it must be a Dell or such but I could be wrong. Since this post is not about your shopping, try making a post about that.

(NT) Looked at Lenovo laptops?
Apr 17, 2015 11:49AM PDT

James Denison:

I have not looked at Lenovo laptops but I did look at a Lenovo 10.1" tablet which is on sale on Office Depot.com last night. It had a 4 out of 5 star rating but the "Proffitt" told me long ago that a tablet would not give me the same level of performance that a laptop would. I see tonight Dell.com has an Inspiron 14" 3000 Series Non-Touch laptop on sale for $199.00; it's regular price is $299.00.

I didn't get into the specs that much except to say the Dell laptop on sale for $199.00 does not have a CD/DVD drive like my Vostro 1510 does which I've used only once to install Quicken on my old laptop several years ago. The Dell $199.00 laptop also has a Celeron processor; never had a computer with one of those. A 10.1" Lenovo tablet on Office Depot.com tonight costs a little bit more than that Dell $199.00 laptop.

Here's the link to the Lenovo 10.1" tablet:

A guy at my local Office Depot was trying to convince me to buy this tablet by ASUS which is on clearance: http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/429442/ASUS-Transformer-2-in-1-Laptop/ I know nothing about ASUS products.

external DVD's for $25
Apr 18, 2015 12:05PM PDT

Use when want, leave in a box or drawer when you don't, keeps laptop lighter, makes tablet a better deal. There are also such for flash cards. Heck I even have an old one for floppies around here somewhere. I personally am not attracted to tablets, seems counter productive to pull and punch fingers across what you're trying to read, not to mention the wear on the surface. Of course it has 2 cameras, easier to use than the laptop. The Asus has twice the storage, RAM and windows OS, the other has Android or maybe windows, they list both. Both are transformer type.

James Denison:

So are you recommending that Dell laptop with the Celeron processor over both of the tablets I listed in my previous post? They've got some cool stuff on Amazon; I've never dealt with them; if I decided to do so would you recommend I buy only from Amazon and not from any of the other sellers on Amazon?

About that floppy drive I've got a PowerSpec PC desktop tower stored away in a bedroom closet which came configured with a floppy drive; a CD ROM drive; a 4GB HD and Windows 95. I tried to use it last Christmas with an old HP inkjet printer to address Christmas card envelopes but the computer wouldn't stay on for more than 10 minutes then it would shut down. It's probably the computer's PS so I packed it back in the closet.

I didn't recommend either one

I just made some comparatives. I would probably prefer that Asus though over the Lenovo model you linked, all things being similar and almost equal. In comparison to the laptop, I think that's personal preference.

Both the laptop and the transformer tablets do offer keyboards, but you also have the detach and touch screen use with the tablets. I personally have never liked any of the "chiclet" keyboards on the laptops, prefering older "clicky" type keyboards for desktops (I can hit about 50 wpm on standard clicky type). That considered, if me, it would be a tie between Dell laptop and the Asus tablet, because for anything more than little use of laptop keyboard, I plug a standard keyboard and mouse into a laptop when I must use one at home.

I learned to type on manual typewriter in late 60's, so since those days I've always been a key banger instead of a light touch. Laptop keyboards don't take that sort of abuse as much as standards do, so I try to save it's keyboard for when I must use it anyway. On the road I may or not take another keyboard with me, but usually decide to just suffer through using the laptop's if I won't be gone more than a day or two.

Personal preferences is why so many different models of almost anything, you are the only one who can know exactly which you prefer.

Buy direct from Amazon if you can, unless it's a manufacturer's page located there.
