Can't Reinstall GoBack

May 26, 2005 3:15PM PDT

I am running win-xp-he. I disabled GoBack to make some partition changes for my hd (Maxtor 120gb - two partitions)using Partition Magic 8.0. When I tried to enable GoBack, I got the following Error Message:

''GoBack is unable to determine which of your hard drives is the boot drive.''
''GoBack cannot be installed until this problem is corrected.''

I completely uninstalled GoBack and tried a fresh install. I received the same error message. Since the current hd is the only drive connected to my pc, and there is no other OS on this drive, why is GoBack causing this error message? How do I correct this so that I can reinstall GoBack?

Thanks,
Ray Savage

Another one bites the dust.

Another message some get is about a dynamic volume, yet the machine has no dynamic volume. It is always after using other than Microsoft partition software. So your call is to Partition Magic support to see if they have an update to fix your now less than standard partition table.

Thanks for your reply. Checked with Symantic, but they could offer no solution. Their Tech Support is "next to nothing"! They at least could pay more to employ English speaking reps!

I'm unsure if this is a solution.

I've yet to see this fixed if some partition changes were made. I can't explain why, but only offer the only out I know of.

Backup the partitions with ACRONIS to a network drive. Then dump all the partitions, use Microsoft's partitioning tools and then blast it back on with ACRONIS. Maybe an OS repair run and then Goback installs.

Its enough work to have me pan PM.

GB Reinstall
May 27, 2005 7:53AM PDT

I had the same problem and unfortunately, Symantec reports that others have, too, BUT they do not have a solution! I went thru the same changes that you tried etc. All we can do is hope, I guess.

I also have a problem installing GB on another machine where it fully installs, wants a reboot at the end,and it is reported as an installed progrem in Add/Remove Programs. Then, WXP comes up with a black screen and then it is a real struggle to get the Desk Top back.

I have used GB for years and love that program and know of two other XP machines with the same install problem with on being the Pro ver.

If you have any luck.....pls post it and I will, too. I've been fighting these problems for several weeks now!

RE: black screen and then it is a real struggle

I experienced the "black screen and then it is a real struggle" problem when I upgraded to XP from ME.

Just one of the reasons I've considered going back to ME. The only thing I like about XP is the little more stability and no low resources problem.

If you ever get around the "black screen and then it is a real struggle" I hope you post back. GB beat the daylights out of System Restore.

Caktus:

Thanks for your comments. I hope I'll stumble on a solution some day! GoBack has been a good friend for many years, and has saved my butt more than times than I can remember. I'll spread the word if I ever get a solution.

RE: Real Struggle

Ray,

GB's deffinately a lifeline. Especially since it makes complete backups so often. This system restore tends to only make backups if I happen to create a restore point. So usually I have to backup several days causing me to loose files and settings.

If I find a way around the problem I'll be sure to pass it on.

Have a great day.

GB a Real Struggle
Jun 8, 2005 8:09AM PDT

I've been using GB for years and hope never to be without it for obvious reasons. However, you should not be limited to the "safe points" in order to go back. Take the nearest, best safe point and then ask for "more times" and it will increment to something closer to your needs. I am fighting the install message, saying that GB can not be installed until it is determined which is the boot drive. This is a new occurrence after mirroring my C drive, using Maxblast 3. All the files and folders were copied successfully except that on the second drive the error popped up. Re-installing will not solve the problem. I am still looking and hoping a real solution will be posted by someone who did it! Symantec's support has been been found less than useful in this case. Previously, I did overcome it by an installation on a totally new drive with only the OS present but that's not a good answer but I am expecting to have to do that again.
