Two options:
1. It isn't a real text file. It's another filetype that by accident got a .txt extension.
2. It isn't a .txt file, but you didn't set Explorer to show extensions so you don't know. Let's say it's a .xxx file. And - somehow - your Folder options are set in such a way that a .xxx file opens with Notepad.
Why not ask the sender?

Hi, hope you can help. I have successfully unzipped the attachment to an email but when I double click on the file it opens in notepad but is just gobbledegook. Any suggestions please. I am running Windows Vista Home and have Open Office loaded not Microsoft Office.
