Can't read screen on laptop

by valeve / March 16, 2005 6:36 AM PST

My neighbor has just given me her PC to look at. It's a Sony lap-top. Don't know what year but it's model #PCG88SL. It runs Win XP. It will start up and open up windows but the screen is so dark that I have to take a flashlight to see anything at all. She has no disks or anything with this PC at all. I can't find any levers which might brighten the screen. Can anyone help?

Thanks, Val

The usual is not an OS issue.

The CCFT tubes or supply fails. Look in the notebook forum and or is a common place to ask "how much?"

As to the CDs, the next problem is that without such, they will only run this OS until they hit some bump in the road. Those CDs are worth about 100 to 400 bucks!

Maybe not a solution, but look for....

....the brightness keys or contrast keys, usually located in combination with the Function keys(for lap top). You may have to press a e.g. "Fn" key with that key to bring up the adjustment screen.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
