Can't print

May 6, 2005 2:59PM PDT

my desktop is running 98SE and is connected to a Lexmark Z-43. It is networked wirelessly to my XP SP2 laptop. I have set-up print sharing on the desktop.I have allowed print and file sharing in the XP firewall. When I try to add a network printer tells me that the printer does not have the correct driver installed. When I continue to find a driver and attempt to install it says that windows cannot connect to the printer, that it either lost it's connection or the name was typed incorrectly.

Please help

and did you 'shared' the printer and file sharing on win 98SE?

And you might need to install the printer drivers on windows xp... Not just Add Printer.

More Info:
I also have the same printer(Z42-43) installed on the XP laptop. This was done because, before I set-up the network i would physically connect to the printer. This print driver is for XP. The Z42-43 on the desktop is for 98SE. Could this contribute to my problem? I have set up file and printer sharing on both machines.

See what's listed in the Printers folder....

of the laptop, and to which port/ports you are printing. It sounds as if Windows could be looking toward the local port on the laptop instead of the network port.

The printer folder on the laptop has LPT 1 checked.
there is a box and a listing for the network printer but when I check the box and try to apply the settings windows won't me allow to do so.

where you want to connect the printer to...

Now try to uninstall the drivers from both pc/laptop

i.e.: Printer will be connected to win 98..

Read the manual (sometrimes you have to install driver first before connecting the printer)

Install the driver
Share it
Print Test

go to the laptop, Install the driver (select Network printer)

Print test

Can you share files between the computers?
I know for my Win 98SE and WinXP computers to share files I had to add NetBEUI. It is not supported in XP and you have to get it off the interent. Search this site and/or Windows support for info. If you can't share files I'm guessing you can't print either.
-but I'm not sure.

Here's a suggestion
Check on the 98 machine the permissoins of the shared printer (right click printer, then either properties or sharing, can't remember each). Make sure that full permission is active for everyone on the machine. You may also need to make sure that the username/ password for the XP machine exists on the 98 machine.

Easy alternative would be to buy a print server for
