Can't play files from xp in windows 7

Sep 29, 2010 5:28PM PDT

I just installed windows 7 ent. on my laptop comp. which previously ran on windows xp. I installed it to my c drive without touching my other drives. But after installing windows 7, I cannot play some video files. When I try to play the files in mediaplayer I get a massage saying "Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct." These files are stored in a folder in my e drive. I noticed that the folder's name is written in green font. My video files in other folders are playable.

Already tried ..... no can do

I think its got something to do with encryption. I might have encrypted it when my laptop was running on xp. I did not do any decryption when I installed win 7 and I think that is the root of the problem. When I right click on the file .... select properties ...... on general tab select advanced ....... the check box for encrypt contents to secure data. When I click detail ....... the user allowed to access data is listed as the username when my laptop was running under xp. When I tried to add another user it is denied even though I am logged on as admin. Hope this makes sense to you. I have tried almost everything I can think of and hope someone/somebody can help.

Thanks for responding

http://www.lostpassword.com has a tool to decrypt those. What I find is this is often a test about how much the files are worth. Sorry but I don't know of any free tool except if you had an unencrypted backup copy.

If possible, I go back to the other computer, decrypt the files, then transfer them over again.. It will take less time if possible.

Hope this helps.
