Can't open Word or Excel from My Documents

Jun 18, 2005 7:24AM PDT

I have a new HP P4 Intel 3.06 processor/1 Gig RAM running XP Home and Office 2003 Professional. I have been running this PC for 3 weeks, and suddenly this afternoon, I am unable to open a Word document or Excel spreadsheet from My Documents. I can open Word or Excel and click file/open and so on and the file opens normally. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Alan,

I am unable to open

Tell what happens if you doubleclick (assuming that's your setting to open it) on the file in Windows Explorer. Nothing? Error message from Windows? Error message from Word? Other program starting?

And does right-click>Open any difference?

And shift-right-click>Open with ... and choose Word, does that make any difference.

More info is better help.

When I had the problem this afternoon, right clicking would cause a freeze as did trying to open from Explorer. It is working properly now. A seemingly unrelated issue: I had installed an update to Spam Inspector and the Spam Inspector icon was missing from the desktop tray. After posting my problem withh Word/Excel, I realized Spam Inspector was not working correctly, so I re-installed the update. Apaprently the two issues were related somehow, because Word and Excel are opening properly.
