Question

Can't open network shares in Linux

Jul 18, 2011 7:10PM PDT

Hi all,
I am playing with a Linux network with a server and a workstation. I configured this as a VM team in VMWare. The server is Cent os 5.6, with Xampp (http server) and a shared public folder. As a workstation I used successively Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Fedora 15 and Debian 6. In all cases on the workstations I can see the webserver on the server, so the LAN is OK. When I go to network, I see the public folder on the server and a Windows network. This is correct. When I try to open the Windows network, I get "Unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server". When I try to open the public folder, I get "Unable to mount location. DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)".
These problems occur with all three tried Linuxes.
How can I open the public folder on a workstation? And (less important) how can I open the Windows network?

Thanks in advance for your help.
Best regards,
Fokke Nauta

Answer
This should fix it:
Jul 18, 2011 7:56PM PDT

In a terminal run:
gnome-file-share-properties
And uncheck "Share public Files on Network".

gnome-file-share-properties

Thanks

Well, I'm not quite there. After "gnome-file-share-properties" a window opens with the message "This feature can not be enabled because the required packages are not installed on your system". BTW, using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS now. Almost everything is greyed out.
Which package do I need to install now?
I went to the Ubuntu software center and choosed File Sharing but there are a load of packages that can be installed.

If you do not have it it should not be problem then..., but maybe you do not have samba too? Samba is program used to connect to windows shares from Linux. Check if you really have it.
For more info check this page:

Still can't mount shares
Jul 18, 2011 10:37PM PDT

I installed Samba. Now I am able to browse the Windows network and see the Windows shares, but I still can't mount them. I get the same message as when I try to open the public folder on the Linux server. And I don't care so much about the Windows shares, primary issue is mounting the Linux share.

Interesting, but ...
Jul 19, 2011 5:30AM PDT

In this network I am working with a Ubuntu client ant not with Windows 7.
I also have a Windows netwerk (server and clients) and on the server I have Cygwin installed with SSH. On the Windows clients I use Winscp to log into the server.

Couldn't get it to work.
Jul 20, 2011 10:15PM PDT

Tried Samba and NFS but I was not succesful in getting it to work properly. Besides, I'm not a Linux expert.

I tried to set up a Linux alternative for our Windows network, but I'm giving up. Windows is not wonderful but at least I can get it to work, client-server systems on a network. With Linux I was yet not able to even come close.
