You will need to be a bit more specific about
Apr 8, 2013 5:08AM PDT

what is happening when you double click the downloaded files.

1. What type of things are you downloading?
2. Where do these things that you download, go to?
3. Do you get any error messages when you double click these things?
4. Are any of these things attachments to emails?
5. What are the three letters after the (dot) on these things? (ie:this is a file.zip)

Answers to these questions will be helpful

I am talking about everything from docs, to pdf files, pictures etc. It does not matter what it is. I can transfer it to an external drive an open it in another mac but It won't open on my computer. All I get is the spin.

Time for a re-install of the OS

which you can do using either the DVD's that came with the machine or with the recovery partition.

But first, run the Disk Utility to see if there is something amiss with the Hard Drive.
Run Repair Disk Permissions after that. (Just a long shot but worth a try)

Can you open anything at all, not the downloaded stuff, like docs, pictures, pdf, on your Mac?

Does it boot correctly? Any error messages?
