can't login to secure sites with vista

Jun 25, 2007 4:14AM PDT

Internet Explorer crashes when I try to login to a secure site. The sites I've tried are comcast.net, mail.yahoo.com, and snapfish.com. As soon as I type my username/password and click the login button, I get this message: "Internet Explorer has stopped working, windows is trying to find a solution to the problem..." and then it says, "A problem caused the program to stop working correcting. windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. " I never get notified, so I guess a solution is not available. I've also tried unchecking Protected Mode in the options, and also using the lowest security and privacy settings on IE, still nothing. Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Something To Try..

First, start by installing the most recent version of Java using the insructions below:

Click on the link to Sun's Java below, then click on the ''Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1'' download button. Follow the prompts, accept the license agreement, then download the full ''Windows Offline Installation'' file to your desktop,(about 15 MB), scan it with your antivirus (just to be sure it's clean). Once that's done, if you've already got a Sun Java version on the computer, (It appears like you may not though) open the Control Panel, double click on the ''Add/Remove Programs'' section, then uninstall all previous versions of the J2SE Java listed there. Once that's done, then install Java JRE 6u1 from the downloaded installer.

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Next, be sure to scan the computer for spyware using a good antispyware tool.

Hope this helps.

I didn't have any JREs installed when I got the computer, but that was one of the first things I did. This was on another website with some insight. http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=10

I ACtually Asked You To Remove The Current...

..and reinstall the new version. (I understand that you currently have JRE 6 Update 1 but I want you to take the current one off, then reinstall it.) Have you done that?

Have you tried temporarily disabling your antivirus program? A few folks are having issue with the preinstalled McAfee programs such as the AV and the firewall.

And since you mentioned the router issue, (It would sure help if you provided more information about exactly HOW you connect to the internet and what hardware you have installed), we're seeing quite a few issues with router and modem firmware as well as Ethernet drivers.. Please update ALL of those if you haven't already.. Router firmware is showing up a lot in regards to connection problems.

Hope this helps.

I uninstalled/reinstalled the JRE, still can't login to secure sites.

I couldn't figure out how to disable AVG antivirus, so I just completely uninstalled it. Still can't login to secure sites.

I downloaded firmware for my Linksys WRT54G router and installed that. No luck.

I couldn't find firmware for a modem, but I found the driver for my Linksys BEFCMU10 modem and installed that. Still can't login to my comcast.net email over the web using IE.

I've always been able to login to these secure sites with firefox 2.0. That's kinda why I thought it was a vista IE problem. I've used a family member's XP SP2 machine with IE7, and I can login to these sites, so it's probably not an IE 7 problem. Seems to be only with a vista machine. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone else with vista that I can try this with and compare settings.

I would've been content using firefox to do all of this secure website business, but there are some sites that do things that firefox can't handle...I think maybe they use microsoft activeX features that firefox can't run.

So, that's it?

If it's not Java, we don't know what it is? I'm running XP Pro, and from what I've seen about Vista, I won't be changing anytime in the foreseeable future.
