Can't log into iTunes Store

Mac Book 6.2
OS 10.6.8

I have a valid Apple ID, but when I try to log into the Store I get an error message every time. Have tried from iTunes, Apple.com, etc.

I have several songs in my Library that were not purchased from iTunes. I downloaded them into iTunes laong before the iTunes Store was in existence.

1. Can this be the problem?
2. Is there a work-around?
3. If I do get in somehow, will iTunes delete all these "outlaw" songs?
