Can't Log In

Feb 11, 2009 9:49PM PST

As a result of trying to remove a virus from my machine, I am no longer able to log into the PC. When Windows boots up, I get a prompt to login as either of two users I have setup, both do not require passwords. I select either user, it says logging in and then says logging off and returns me to the same screen to select the user.

I was able to install a fresh copy of XP in another folder and get access to files and folders, scanned for viruses and did not find any. However, I really would like to get the older installation working again. Also, how can I access my older Outlook emails, I could not find any PST files on the PC.

Any ideas how I should try and resolve this?

One small detail.

You didn't tell if this was XP Home or Pro so I'm going to give the XP Home answer.

Step 1. Boot XP Home in SAFE MODE and login with the Administrator account. If that works, proceed to step 2.

Step 2. Create a new account and move the files from the failed account to the new account using this link -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151

I've tried that also

It's actually XP Pro - I have tried booting up in Safe Mode and logging in as Administrator but that user also behaves the same way.

Then you can have corrupt profiles.

Type XP CORRUPT PROFILES to discover all the prior discussions.

Repair is nearly impossible without a good working account. But if you use that Microsoft link as a guide you can backup those users and start fresh.

-> This is all about having spare admin accounts. Where were yours?

Also, I was wondering

I wonder which DLLs or executable files are in use at the time of logging in. It may be possible to replace them if they are corrupted.

If you research corrupt profiles you discover a few things.

1. It's not corrupt dlls.
2. Microsoft is not showing any sign they'll fix it.
3. It matches your issue.

4. If you don't backup, it's not my fault your files are gone if you proceed to step 5.
5. Perform the XP REPAIR INSTALL. (see google.)

Will the instructions in that link guide me in restoring the programs and icons I had in my profile into the new xp install I did?

BTW

I did try to do a XP Repair Install and that also did not work. Is it my profiles that are now bad?
