can't install XP updates

I downloaded some XP updates and installed them, but I get a "not installed" message:

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB890923)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB893066)

1) what are they?
2) do I need these?
3) How do I installed them or know if they are installed?
4) How do I get the yellow ! alert icon to stop flashing and go away
5) anything else I should know?
