Resolved Question

Can't install Word on new computer

Nov 23, 2011 3:49AM PST

I just bought a new computer with Windows 7. I want to install Word 2002, which I like and use for my job every day and have the disk, but it's telling me that it can't connect to the Microsoft activation service through the internet. I don't have a phone line that I can use. I've tried reading about this on Microsoft's website, but I'm very computer illiterate and it's way over my head. Can someone explain to me what they mean about changing my proxy or what else I could try?
Thanks much.

Word 2002 May Be The Issue
Nov 23, 2011 4:04AM PST

Support for the older Office 2002 products has ended.. See the link below and it doesn't include Office 2002 items:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950929

Still, there is another MS article which lists phone numbers which might get it done for you..

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851

All you need is a cell phone to make the call with.. Of course, if MS refuses to support your older version, you may have no other choice than to purchase a newer version.

Hope this helps.

connected to the internet anyway? If so, what type of internet connection do you have, eg dial-up, ASDL, or Broadband?

Who or what said that you need to change your proxy server? What was the exact message/instructions?

Do you connect to the internet via a proxy server?

Did Word 2002 install, or has installation halted because of this 'activation' message?

While you wait for the phone line to go in.

Go get Openoffice from openoffice.org so you can continue to edit documents while you wait for a phone line.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950929 tells how to contact Microsofts activation service by phone (cell phone would be fine) as long as you can't connect to Internet to activate the product.

Thanks, everyone, for your help. I was able to call the number to get it activated. I was thinking I had to have a land line to install it. That's how much I don't know! It is so nice to have a place for people like me to go to and have so many helpful people.
