Can't install Vista

Mar 31, 2007 6:09AM PDT

I'd appreciate any ideas...I bought Windows Vista Home Premium edition and each time I try to install I get a message that the Norton System Works 2005 that I have installed is incompatible and installation is halted. I had removed any Norton products over a year ago and don't know how to proceed. I assume I have to delete something from the registry but do not know how. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Bob

It wasn't designed for Vista...

SystemWorks 2005 was designed for Windows XP, not Vista, so there is no guarantee it will work with the latest version of Windows. The software was designed to tweak and protect Windows, but given the overhaul of features and functionality in Vista you can't expect the same tweaks to work. In fact, I would expect major problems if you did manage to get it to install due to the nature of the software. In short, I would not try to press the issue, instead finding software that is designed to work with Vista rather than trying to makeshift it.

I think he/she said...

That they have already removed the previous Norton products yet it still doesn't install.

OP: Sorry but I don't have a suggestion to your question.

Ah, my mistake...

I misread it as attempting to install SystemWorks on Vista. Sorry about that. In that case Norton Removal Tool, suggested by flywheel88, is the best option.

Thanks!!

I used the Norton Removal Tool & got past that hurtle; now I still can't install Vista because Vista says that a file--- windows/system32/drivers/hwfprot.sys is missing or corrupt. The file comes up when I search C: drive, and I've tried reinstalling drivers, but Vista will still not install. Any ideas? Thanks, Bob

Do you have any HyWave software installed?
Apr 5, 2007 1:32PM PDT

That particular system file is not part of Windows, but traces back to software available from the HyWave Corporation. It's a Chinese company that develops software designed to restrict access to and hide system files, prevent unwanted changes, etc. Look through Add/Remove in the Control Panel and look for anything from HyWave, specifically "WindowsExpert" and "File System protector." Uninstall if found, reboot, and try again. The Windows Installer Cleanup utility may also be helpful, depending on how HyWave designed their installer.
