Mar 31, 2011 12:46PM PDT

Running Vista SP2, getting error code 80070020 trying to install update KB2478935, tried all of MS's official methods to get it installed and nothing, also tried a manual install from safe mode and got error code 0x8007043c

words and stuff...

Yes, I tried everything in this list http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883825 pertaining to the error that Windows update throws, it throws the same error using all methods, the only time I get error 0x8007043c is when I tried to install the update from safe mode, which apparently isn't allowed...

If http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883825 does not resolve it, then you have to wonder what damage the OS has suffered. If you can supply a HIJACKTHIS log immediately after the CLEAN BOOT I could check to see if it was clean.

As stated

I tried everything on that list before posting here, here's the HJT log you requested http://pastebin.com/ex25Zxt7

Avast, MalwareBytes and Spybot are installed. Super Anti Spyware was as well, but I had uninstalled it due to a glitch causing it to eat up the CPU, though scanning with all of these had found nothing on the machine.

I tried to run scans of Avast and Clam from Linux, but for some reason this box has issues with running Ubuntu on live CD for anything heavy, I'm guessing it's either the crappy IDE controller or useless optical drive since I've got a Semp 64 with only 1Gb of ram that can run the live CD for more then a week without locking up

I see some things there.

The machine is not clean.
1. I see Spybot which is now generating conflicts, same if you see Teatimer.
2. The HOSTS entry looks broken. You tell us why it's like that.
3. Avast appears to be installed too.

--> This is not a clean boot. There are items that could step in and stop the install in that log file.

These are not the end of what it could be. For example file and registry permissions could still be a factor but at least there are a few items in that log file.

In closing, it's a shame that this stuff does not work without such tinkering. Again I find it to be caused by malware and other things that Microsoft can never account for.

sorry for not being able to reply for the last week or so, been very busy around here...

Ok, I've tried again with the msconfig option, ythis time removing avast, malwarebytes, superantispy and spybot(never use teatimer anyways) and now WU tells me that the update isn't for this machine...

Hosts file? Dunno either.

I can explain that.

With those older protection softwares in place Windows Update can screw up.
