Can't install Critical Update

by Cindi Haynes / June 5, 2004 2:49 AM PDT

Hi,

This is the first time that MS Update has failed for me. I'm trying to install the MS04-011 update, and it's continually failed since April!

I've tried downloading the patch directly, at least there I get a message that another app has c:\winNT\system32\eventlog.dll open, to retry. Well, I've shut down every possible thing, ran 2 virus scanners, ad-alert, emptied trash and temp folders, and closed down every process that will close in order to get this to install, and it still won't go, either from the update site or the downloaded file.

Has anyone else experienced this? I've tried searching here and elsewhere, but haven't seen anything about it yet.

Running Win2KPro.

Thanks,
Cindi

Hi Marianna,

Sounds a lot like I don't want this patch after all!

Maybe I'll just skip it. Happy

Hi Cindi,

The severity rating is Critical for Windows 2000 users. Windows 2000 users is vulnerable to LSASS, LDAP, PCT, Winlogon, Metafile, Utility Manager, Local Descriptor Table, H.323, Virtual DOS Machine, Negotiate SSP, SSL, ASN.1 "Double Free". If you can't succeed in installing the patch, you might want to follow the work-arounds to at least protect your system.

You can find the work-around for Windows 2000 at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-011.mspx
Look for General Information>Vulnerability Details and read the work-around.

Some system failed to install this update because of Sasser worm infection. I'm not saying that your system is infected with Sasser worm, but you might want to verify that it is not.

Also you might want to review the Event Log of your Windows 2000 which should show you which Windows services is being called when you are trying to install this particular update. Maybe temporarily disabling that service will allow you to install the patch or you might want to install the patch in Safe mode or try installing the update in command prompt.

To install the security update without any user intervention, use the following command at a command prompt for Windows 2000 Service Pack 2, Windows 2000 Service Pack 3, and Windows 2000 Service Pack 4:

Windows2000-kb835732-x86-enu /passive /quiet

To install the security update without forcing the system to restart, use the following command at a command prompt for Windows 2000 Service Pack 2, Windows 2000 Service Pack 3, and Windows 2000 Service Pack 4:

Windows2000-kb835732-x86-enu /norestart

Good luck and hope the above helps.

Donna

Hi,
Do you have your virus protection running ? Try disabling that and see if you can download.....

Hi Master Green,

No virus protection running here, so that can't be causing a problem. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

Have you tried renaming C:\Winnt\System32\catroot2 to
C:\Windows\System32\CR2OLD, then go back and install the updates.

I had the same problem last year, renaming the catroot worked for me. Ann

Hi,
Okay, there are several possile causes or matters involved and all pretty much involve a process of elimination. Since your virus protection was not one of them, can you check your security settings. Some times this is set too high. In going down the list,a Spy Blocker will prevent it (if you have one). It's also suggested if you have AOL, to minimize it once you open, then open Internet Explorer and then try the Windows Update...Keep us posted...

Still not working.
by Cindi Haynes / June 15, 2004 8:27 AM PDT

I'm not infected with any virus.
Won't install from Update.
Won't install from downloaded file.
Unable to rename CatRoot folder, access denied.
Unable to view eventlog, error says the interface is unknown.
Can't find any workarounds at Microsoft's website.
Unable to install anything from command prompt.
Tried setting security to Low, still nothing.
Not using AOL. Closing every process and application doesn't help.

The errors seem to center around eventlog, and when trying to install from the download, eventlog being open prevents the install. But, eventlog isn't open. And, the Win2000 CD doesn't allow file repair.

Looks like I'll have to live without it.
