Can't Install Comodo Firewall Free on Vista SP2

Feb 28, 2011 5:35AM PST

Having problems installing Comodo Firewall Free. As a matter of fact, I can't install any security software except for malwarebytes and superantispyware. Have Trend Micro Antivirus installed but can't turn it on in Security Center. Running Vista Home Basic SP2 on a HP Presario C500 (RQ335UA#A). Intel Celeron M CPU @ 1.86 GHz. 512 MB 32 bit. Any help would be appreciated. Thx.

"Trend Micro Antivirus installed but can't turn it on in Security Center"

Since this is not a Microsoft product I'd check if Trend says it is running. The integration of some AV products failed in the past so we wait for them to fix it.

Grif's Advice
Mar 1, 2011 4:43AM PST

I followed Grif's advice and that didn't work either. I'm trying the Sophos Anti-Rootkit scanner.

Very odd.

Are there any other clues like "torrent use"?

And Did The Malware Scans Find Something?
Mar 1, 2011 11:50AM PST

"that didn't work either" doesn't really give us any information what was found during the scans.. Or whether you were able to run the scans at all? More clues are always a big help.

Find Something (gr

I tried to run the scans you suggested starting with rkill.exe. Immediatly an IE dialog box with run, save, or cancel rkill.bat options appeared. If I selected run or save the process kept repeating. This happen with rkill.bat and rkill.scr. So to answer your question, the scans did not run. I also tried Sophos Anti-Rootkit which also found nothing.

The Malware scans did not even run
Mar 1, 2011 1:43PM PST

I followed your suggestions to the letter. I ran rkill.exe first. An IE dialog box kept popping up asking me if I wanted to run, save or cancel rkill.bat. Trying to run rkill.bat or rkill.scr did the same thing. Not one scan actually ran and I was very patient. I also tried Sophos Anti-Rootkit. It did scan but found nothing. Malwarebytes ran and found nothing. Superantispyware found only cookies and while watching the scan I saw the output actually rewrite to the screen to show no infections. Not even the cookies were shown in the final output. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The IE dialog box is unusual.

Try Running This Version Of Rkill
Mar 2, 2011 4:12AM PST

There are a few types of malware which have identified the name of "rkill" and will block it.. Try downloading the same file but with a different name from the link below.. It performs the same rkill service of blocking the malware so you can then install and run Malwarebytes, etc. but it has a different name:

Note: Clicking on the link below will immediately bring up the download dialogue window.

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/WiNlOgOn.exe

As before, run this file FIRST on the problem computer, and if it runs sucessfully, install, update and run Malwarebytes per the previous instructions.

Hope this helps.

New version of RKILL
Mar 3, 2011 2:25AM PST

Thanks Grif. I will give it a try right now. Yesterday I tried to take a screen shot of the IE dialog box but the prtscrn button did not work for some reason and therefore I was unable to paste into Paint. I did run HijackThis and I'll post the log from the link provided by R. Proffitt.

Try Running This Version Of Rkill
Mar 3, 2011 5:41AM PST

Well I tried running the new version of Rkill, WiNlOgOn, and it did not run successfully. I had the same problems with the IE dialog box. Subsequently I posted the HJT log on bleeping computer "Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs" forum and I'm waiting for a reponse. Thanks for everyones help so far. If this doesn't work I'm going to suggest that my client reinstall Vista. I don't know what else to do.
