General discussion

can't install anything off a disc

Aug 16, 2009 8:44AM PDT

I have an asus 24x DVD RW and it worked fine until I uninstalled a few of my games so I could reinstall them after I installed a few drivers. it reads the DVD fine, it shows up in my computer, the icon shows up, I can even start the autorun on some instances, but when I try to install it. the installer never shows up, sometimes it even says I need to put in the correct disc, though it says its still in the drive.

the same goes for running the installer through the setup.exe on the disc, instead using the autorun. the installer sort of starts up, then It just quits with no indication why.

the weird thing is, I can manually drag all the files off the disc, and onto my desktop, and install it that way no problem.

but that is incredibly inconvenient and I shouldn't have to do that

I have tried it with 3 different games and non work. some get further than others though, the furthest I got installing from a CD is with crysis warhead and the worst I got was from far cry 2

im confused

why did you uninstall some of your games before you updated drivers? why did you do that? dont ever do that again because you dont need to. however you are right and it is confusing why it won't install. it it was vista i could understand. try to run the setup on compatibility mode with windows xp service pack 2 or 3. should fix it.

does it really matter?
Aug 17, 2009 6:32PM PDT

does it even matter why I uninstalled them? the fact of the matter is my DVD drive will not install games anymore. Last night I was able to install crysis after using a registry repair program, but now I can't install anything anymore. same story, the install windows just dissappears.

the setup process is still present in the processes tab of the task manager but I can't access it, only end the process

Edit: I don't know if this means anything but when I move some icons from the desktop to other folders, they appear to be an unknown file/ generic windows file icon

the icons still work and the names are there, they just don't have the picture anymore. I'm thinking there is a big error with the registry

am I going to need to reinstall windows? is there any way I can do so without losing my data?

hold on

don't worry about that, it happens sometimes when Windows "forgets" to load the icon, as log as it still opens you're ok. Also i has the same problem with CODWAW and MoH Airborne. i thought it was because older graphics engine software that the Airborne used wouldn't install if there was a newer graphics engine already installed. So this might not be the solution but try to install the games from oldest to newest. Also if you are running Vista or Windows 7 RC you can also right click on the setup.exe file on the CD/DVD and go to compatibility settings and change them to Windows XP service pack 2 or 3. I recently had to install Office 2007 like that on my windows 7 RC. Hope this helps.

that didn't work either, the registry fix aint workin, i dont get it. I even replugged everything inside the computer, and I can hear the disc spinning, there must be some sort of error with some sort of file

i don't understand

why nothing is working, it should. At this point i think as long as you can backup your files the easiest thing to do is to reinstall windows. Sorry but I think you've done a lot of screwing around and thats the best thing to do. Next time just install the programs on the hard drive you want them on by changing the installation directory and just keep it simple, thats the easiest way to avoid trouble.

Hi,

Did you ever find a solution to this problem as i am now having it on my PC and cant find anything on the Web about it

I'd start with a new DVD-drive.

That is, if copying all to the hard disk is too much of a nuisance.

Formatted HDD

Hi,

I tried deleting the drivers and reinstalling but i think it was something in the registry that was pointing it to the old dive letter. ( I changed the drive letters from f: and g: to a: and b: respectively )

As I couldn't find anything in registry and uninstalling and reinstalling didn't work (on two DVD drives) I reinstalled and now works a treat.
