can't install antivirus

by GeorgeRR / November 25, 2009 12:35 AM PST

I am trying to reload my os (vista) on my desktop setup and I can't get any of the popular free applications to install. I have used GW scan 5.12 a number of times and it still doesn't install. Anyone have an idea as to what's up??
The system is a Gateway 5438 w/4 gigs of ram 320g hd or 500g hd. Same results with either.

Thanks
George

Most common issue?

The vista is a 64 bit version and we didn't get the right version of antivirus.

That detail is missing from your post so I'm left to guess.

In reply to: nope,

Tell us more about that, eg, why was that necessary, and how did you do the re-install?

What happens when you try to install the anti-virus? What error messages?

Mark

In reply to: That re-load of Vista.

I got a message from some fly by nite antivirus that said I had a virus.
I can't remember the name of it, but I didn't open it and it took control of my machine anyway. I tried everything I could think of to delete it but no go. It will download the install files but won't install them.
Then I ran GWSCAN 5.12 and wrote 0's to the whole damned drive more than once. Then the reload.(I have restore discs)
As an example I tried to load AVGfree (which is my fav anti virus) and I get error codes; 0XE001C065 or ....10045, or ....1C04C etc. Usually a different # each time I try. I've tried other programs with similar results.
